Cheap turbo set up any good?

Alright, I understand ya. Can you give me a list with the major peices of the turbo kit with prices. Exclude piping and v-band's/couplers from price list. I should be able to get a real good deal on those components. I also won't be spending any money on welding wire/gas because I'm going to tack the pipe's at home and take them to my community college and finish welding. I just am not understanding how it can be $3500 for a DIY kit. Here is a SMALL list of some prices of some major things. Most these prices are for BRAND NEW and some say I could get away with a DSM BOV which would be a hell of a lot cheaper.

MP T-70 Turbo - $600
42# injectors and MAF - $300
Tial 38mm Wastegate - $200
Tial 50mm BOV- $200
Intercooler- $150
255lph Fuel Pump- $100
----------------------
$1,550 + you say $500 for tune = $2,050

I bet I could get away with $2,200 bucks at most, and if I find some "hookups" maybe less.
I wasn't including any of the supporting fuel (injectors/pump/tune) in my original price, just the base turbo setup.

As far as a tune goes, are you just having a chip made or what?
I'm not trying to argue with you at all, it's knocking sense into my head actually. Just trying to see what else you have that needs to be added to price. Thanks!

One big thing I see is your are exlcuding all of the oiling component prices. Either way, yes I can get you a list. My buddy Rio95 showed me a full list of prices he incurred while doing his setup which is the exact model we are using for mine. His list includes a few extras not needed since he replaced his clutch and a few other things at the same time so his list comes out to be a little higher (I think around 3600-3700), but when I get home I will get the file and post it.

As far as the tune, I am planning to take it to a dyno tuner and get a chipped burned, yes. However, after talking to rio recently we may both go in on some very nice tuner software that he has been doing alot of researching on lately. I'm not sure yet since my car won't be done til spring due to money constraints.

Just curious, where are you getting v-bands for cheap?

in general, you do tend to get what you pay for. if you're lucky though, you might be able to get gently used stuff and keep the cost closer to $2000 though.

good luck with it

Very true. I am doing a mix of both. While I dont mind getting a used e-bay BOV or a used maf, I refuse to get some beat up used turbo or a used fuel pump or just stuff like that. Pretty much I just go by, I am spending a lot of money on this therefore it would be foolish to go cheap on parts that need to be nice. Idk, somethin like that.

Yea, the big area of oil lubrication I haven't reasearched a whole lot. That is where I don't know exactly what I need to get.

BTW, Thanks for getting that list for me!

As far as the V-bands go, that buddy who owns the exhaust shop said he may be able to get me a good deal on those also. But, we'll see.

I see you live in Grand Rapids....well I'm in Charlotte, around 15 miles south of lansing. Where do you reccomend for a dyno tune?

If my buddy and I dont get that software I am going to take it to Alternative Auto Performance. Its Lidio's place. It's in Mount Clemens. Ive heard nothing but good things about them. I have alot of buddies who have had HORRIBLE experience with Livernois so definitely don't go there.

Be careful with v-bands as there are definitely good ones and bad ones.

do yourself a favor and do not go with the Ebay V bands.. There are other reliable companies selling them, such as BG, Summit, Jegs, Racepartsolutions, ATP, ect..

Like others said, you need to be realistic with your budget, because it WILL be more then you think.
Figure on new prices, and if you find deals, that is money saved... People start having to cut corners when they do not set aside a realistic budget, and you DO NOT want to cut corners when doing something of this nature... not worth the trouble in the first place, IMO.
Do it right, or you will regret it, trust me.. I've seen many people do this

IMO, your best bet is to jump on the BG kit, as I believe he is having a sale, as usual.. High quality kit, high qaulity parts, at a VERY reasonable price.

Every little thing starts to add up. I have a dsm bov, and originally had 42lb injectors and lightning maf for $369. I sold the maf for like 40 and got a pmas protube for more, but it is good so far. I still do not have a muffler put on, which will probably set me back another 100. My first budget was off by like alot. I always read you can have 2 out of the 3. fast/reliable/cheap

Mine is not near as expensive as some kits, but I don't think it was cheap.

For those of you who have done single turbo setups, how many v-band clamps did you end up using?

I used 2 2.5s on the crossover. Then there is a 3.5 holding my dp to my turbo, plus I got another 3" that I am going to put on my dp so I can disconnect it from the rest of the exhaust.

My dp starts off as a 3.5", but that was not going to fit, thats why it gets smaller to a 3"

yeah i did, but i bought cheap used turbos.....i think i paid a bit over 300 for both of them....i mean, they still work good, just smoke a bit. also, that price was including a oil sump pump and maf/injectors. Not a tune though, i allready had a custom chip....but that was $500.

you can do it for cheap, but you can use all new shiny parts!

my next deal is to step up to a single t-70, however i hate to mess with something that works, and i know my current setup passes emissions...

How much power are you making with your current setup? That's what nice is here in Michigan, no having to pass emissions....:p

Thanks, so I'll probably only need 3 v bands? I plan on dumping exhaust right from DP depending on how loud it is so I probably won't have to worry about that other one.

You really have no idea how much money you will need. This is assuming that you don't want to build some rigged POS.

This is from my 3 months of turbo purchasing. It adds up, especially the trips for little crap that you need. I nust have over about 50 receipts.

Some of these things might not apply, but I tink it is missing some things, such as autometer guages.

Thanks for the list, but quite a few things on there I already have, or won't need replacing. The motor will be basically an already rebuilt mostly stock motor.

All pipeing will be a SMALL fraction of what you payed for yours. Where did you get a BOV for $37.00? DSM? I'll only need a couple things from the right side of your list. Can you link me to oil drain kit and oil feed kit?

Now let me see your $1200 list..??

Oh yeah thats right.

NOT POSSIBLE!

If you would have read through the thread better, you would have saw that I realized the price will be more then that. But I can gurantee that it won't be close to 4k.

It's not like I don't understand that this is going to cost a lot of mulah.....

Rio has posted the list I was going to there you have it. I guess either way it wouldn't be a bad idea to go into a turbo build being able to spend 4 grand. I am definitely not saying you would need to spend that much, but just so you don't get screwed running out of money.
