whos done it the cheapest and how much? i dont mind searching around for parts and i got plenty of time

anybody whos done it chime in

my auto is driving me insane i cant even burn from a dead stop but it takes off like a raped ape up top

I wouldn't swap. The AOD has a bad reputation and it doesn't deserve it. You need a torque converter and a quality shift kit and a tranny cooler wouldn't hurt either. It will burn the tires if you set the tranny up right.

Well I for one would definitely do it- I am going to be doing this in a few weeks. As for the cheapest way, well I guess you could go to any junkyards and look for the parts, it's basically a pedal/tranny install plus a clutch job. Tons of posts/info in here about this swap. I have been saving for this for awhile now, the only used parts I'll be using are the tranny harness and the pedal assembly- V8 only (screen name) in here has a lot of that stuff for sale. You may want to be careful putting a used t-5 in your car (if that's what you do). It sucks that the tremecs are so expensive, but they are new anyway.

An AOD that is built up is great, but a stock 150,000 mile one sucks for performance, no matter what anyone says (I know from experience). The AOD was designed for grannies (the stock ones anyway).

I changed my blown up T-5 for a four banger 5 speed. Costs were: $75.00 for trans, $75 for a good used crossmember, $30.00 for a new energy susp trans mount, and about $20.00 in trans fluid.

Like mi sig says. On the ground with the front tires on car ramps, by myself. Total est. time- 11-12 hours.

I spent:

$50 for clutch pedals, flywheel, clutch cable, stock shifter, starter index plate, inner shifter seal, shift boot and trim plate, clutch fork, clutch dust cover.

$10 for crossmember

$12 for exhaust hanger

$299 for King Cobra Clutch

$140 for aluminum driveshaft (wasn't needed but i wanted one :) )

$25 for bellhousing

FREE t-5 which i rebuilt myself for $150 in parts.

i bought an 87 gt as a parts car for 200, it had everything i needed, plus extra, but a good flywheel and that was given to me for free and a clutch disc and pressure plate.. i bought the pressure plate for 80 and the ford racing clutch disc for 60.

More than once I've read where folks get parts cars for very little money- where on earth did you find a gt for 200 bucks? Around here, even if the damn thing is in 500 pieces, people still want way too much for stangs. I wish I could get a parts car for a similar price. By the way, that is a great way to do this swap if you can find one.

it was off in the boondocks and i really think it was a stolen car as it was originaly silver but black was painted straight over it and it had no title and the dude had a BS story. oh well, but i find even running cars with titles for 100 bucks usually

I bought a non-running '90 GT with black interior for $250. The interior was in perfect shape and i was able to use 95% of it.

Then i parted the car out for $1500 :)

your exhaust and driveshaft will be just fine.

honestly, the best, and cheapest method is to get a parts car. I found a wrecked 5 speed ssp notch that had just had a brand new t5 put in a couple thousand miles before it was wrecked. My bro and I used the t5 and all components and swapped it into his 88 notch, we bought the parts car for $425 and stripped and sold the rest of the stuff at a profit. We essentially got paid to do the swap.

if you don't have a place to do the swap, and are on a budget crunch, you could buy the cheapest 5 speed running mustang you could find, swap over all the 5 speed crap to your car, then swap your aod over to that mustang and sell it at the same price.

otherwise your off to junkyard hunting, and searching for the parts and piecing it together.

i guess im junkyard hunting, if there still is one after this hurricane, i dont have the money to buy another 5 speed car and nor do i have parents willing to let me do that parts car is out of the question as well....

i guess ill just run down to a junkyard and find everything and pay for it .....

can somebody give me a list of parts to find?

If you look back someone pretty much listed what you need. I have a stock short throw shifter from a 85 they are shorter throw in that year as opposed to earlier years I do not know if they changed after but it it is definately shorter than other stock ones I seen. I have the boot and rubbers too, and aluminum pedals(covers)

- 4 banger 5 speed (entire car & had double hump cross-member) $300
- 4 speed Bell housing (I had to machine it to work) $40
- Used clutch fork $10
- Used clutch (worn to the rivets almost) and flywheel $100
- New clutch cable $40

Total $490 ($367 USD)

Same situation as me... How do you like it? Do you even use 1st gear? I need to take off in 2nd because first gear is too low. Also when going about 60km/h can you downshift and get the car sideways from spinning?

Its Awsome! 1st gear is so low! If I am rolling even the slightest bit, I am in second. I havn't tried the down shifting at 60 and get sideways thing, but with the bald tires on it now I might be able to... I would have to rev it up and dump the clucth and it would prob do a 360! The car picks up speed so much faster! I love it :D
