Is the gt-40y the cheapest aluminum heads and how good are they? I know everybody lives and breaths AFR's and Twisted wedge but if I could pick up a pair of cheap heads for say 600 or so would it be worth it or should I just get some windsor jr. iron heads?

I donno if you want to get "cheap" heads. Alum. expands at a different rate then the iron block, so If you have cheap heads with bad tolerances, then you very well might get leakage issues.

There is nothing "cheap" about any of the heads Ford sells through the FRPP program. They are of the highest quality and are the easiest true bolt on aluminum head to install. The GT-40Y heads are the original aluminum offering from Ford and the design is almost 10 years old so they are cheaper than other heads on the market for this very reason. They are not of cheap construction or materials and make very decent horsepower and can be ported to make even more. They are still a very vialbe option for the budget minded person looking to upgrade to aluminum heads. They will not leak due to differences in material. They have a very thick deck and can even be milled for higher compression.

So if cheap ain't good and good ain't cheap then I guess everybody that wants new heads spends 1500 on the heads and then has them machined....no. They look for good cost effective alternatives, like Ronstang said the gt-40y heads. Last time I looked I haven't seen any CHEAP aluminium heads anyway.

Ronstang would the gt-40y heads be better than say the windsor Jr. heads in performance? I know I'm going to give up a lot of weight but its not like I'm running a lot of weight in my 65 anyway.

I went through 3 different heads before settling on the Edelbrocks. First up were Windsor alum heads. Now Flatlander Racing won't sell them anymore. Give them a call and hear what they have to say about the World Products heads. I voiced my concerns to the machine shop doing my car but they said it was all bs and bolted up the Windsor Jrs. When my builder got the block back from the machine shop, he noticed that the heads leaked and generally sucked. He then went with TF twisted wedge but the springs busted on the dyno when he was breaking in the engine. He took those back and went with the edelbrocks only because he could not find any AFRs for my 351. I would have to guess that the Ford heads would have to be better than the worlds only because the latter don't seem to be well made.

anyways, this topic has been discussed in several threads here in the past.
