Chinese Cobra Intake or Chinese Typhoon Intake?

I think this is the key to what he was saying.
Equal time, not equal ports. The intake that provides the better foundation before porting will take less time to get good flow numbers out of.

Just like the guy that's building his house and already has frames, is gonna be done before the guy starting with tree trunks.

I bet the differences in time will be very small (maybe not even worth mentioning). I wish t-moss would jump in with his take on that. Im sure he has experience on BOTH usa made and chinese cobras.

After all, that is what he does.

i've got the typhoon intake.i bought it brand new for $295 at my local speedshop 3 years ago.i would've gladly got an edelbrock intake that exept it costs just over $500.my intake performs great and most people that look at it don't know the difference until i tell them.if you can afford to spend $200 extra for basically the same thing then go for it,but i could think of alot of things that the extra money could be spent on.

I find this entire post amusing, why would someone lay down good money for something they know is a cheapo chinese knock off meant to take money from our already failing economy, why not give the money to the americans that did the R&D and took the time to make sure that it was a quality piece??? I definately know where my money went, right back into the US economy and not overseas where they can make a garbage copy of a quality part and actually hurt the companies that made the quality piece

Actually there is a significant time involved. I have ported literally dozens of intakes and cylinder heads and that is why I am mentioning it. If there was no real time or effort involved then I would not have bothered with this whole subject. But when you get into the actual casting of these things and spend real time trying to make them work then I thought it would be best to let someone know that there is a real difference. You can believe what you want, and I can not change your mind, but from MY experience, they are not worth the time and effort, unless you have nothing but time on your hands. And when I say port an intake or cylinder head, I am talking REAL porting, flow bench included. Anyone can take a sandpaper roll and make it look shiny, but that does not mean the port actually works. So end result if you want to save a few $$ and you have the time and materials to do the porting RIGHT. then go knock yourself out, more power to you. You will have the satisfaction of a job well done. Which is why most of us do this in the first place, the love of the sport.

Also, to the original poster. If you are just looking for a cheap and good performing intake then consider finding a used intake off of a 5.0 Explorer. They are the same as gt-40 and cobra intakes but without the casting problems of the chinese replicas.

I am searching for an explorere intake as we speak. I just thought that the rectangular ports on the typhoon would give me a bit more top end breathing..

I plan to keep it NA but go with gt40 heads and E303 cam.

I have the typhoon intake and like it very much. Out of the box it fit perfect and i had no problems. Now its ported and i'm putting 468hp to the wheels on the juice.

Holy moly that thing looks awesome. I plan on having the intake port patched and cleaned up a bit. Machine work is cheap for me since my bud owns a high performance shop. I think im gonna go with the Typhoon since i plan on adding serious mods later.

Did you notice loss of low end torque?

I don't think low end torque is a problem on a nitrous car in general. But i have a 3000 stall converter with a low 4r70w gearset and 3:73 gears. It revs quick so i don't notice any low end loss even without the spray. Here is a vid without the spray but i did have the timing set at 15*.

Well i wont be hitting NOS for a while on my motor, but i do have a AOD, which i will also be installing a higher stall converter and 3.73 gears. I think im gonna go with the rectangular ported typhoon.

In my eyes its a really decent intake for the money. It performs well and looks good. I guess some of the early castings had alot of flash but i didn't have to clean mine up at all. I had it ported because i wanted to not because it was crap. Do a search on this intake and most everyone that has it likes it. You won't hear that about the BBK intake. Bottom line its a good knockoff intake!

I swapped out the Eddy RPM for the Typhoon intake simply to complete the polished theme under the hood...sorry but I had zero fittment or oil consuption issues. My Eddy had casting issues and ear broke off at 10lbs torque...and a helicoil pulled out on me as well . Fact is my untouched typhoon makes AS good power, looks better and cost 300 less than an RPM in canada. As for numbers..Eddy heads with a touch of exhaust side work, Comp XE270 cam with lil 1.6 rr's and box stock typhoon put down 316/345 tuned....I wouldn't even consider swaping the intake.

I agree with D-Man. My intake fit perfect and required just to be bolted on. When I check the port matching onto my ported stock E-7's.... Perfect Match. Just a tad smaller than the head ports.

This debate has been beaten to death. The chinese intakes are GOOD DEALS and if you want to SAVE money, get the Typhoon.

Oh yeah, I got their 70MM Throttle body and EGR and it lined up PERFECT and performs flawlessly. All I did was add a little bit of grease in the cup where the linkage snaps in and never had it bind. Smooth as eggs!!!

Oh then i stand corrected, but most of the time i dont find them to be much of a deal.

so does anyone have a opinion on the casting quality of either intake? I know the cobra rep requires a baffle, but what about the typhoon?

Not sure what the final price was when it sold, but my advice was to look out there and you might find a good deal on an Original Cobra Intake, Good Luck!

for whatever reason mine EATS oil.. i can't run the car hard, or that car literally goes up in smoke, oil pours into the intake.. somethings not right elsewhere, but the intake not having the baffle kills it.. i dont have to much of a problem with it otherwise.. i when and sanded mine, primed, painted, cleared.. wet sanded etc. on mine.. turned out good looking.. i'll fiddle with it more and see if i can get the cracker to work right. heres mine
