Chirping tires

I keep seeing on here people talking about breaking loose thier tires when they shift. I know some of you have big hp, but i'm sure i've seen a lot of bolt-on only combos talking about spinning into 3rd.... and i dont think they all had gears.

all i can manage is a 3rd to 2nd shift chirp, and i'm not even sure its not just my clutch squeelin. it lasts like .2secs! I realize i only have 2:73's right now

so my question is how are these nearly stock cars managing to spin through 3rd from a roll? is my car a dog? (It doesn't feel sluggish) or will a 2:73 to 3:73 make it bust loose just by stepping on the gas from a roll? Am i missing something here? From what i've seen on here, guys just mash the go pedal and they spin.... i have to drop a gear and rev it to just get a little chirp.

Are you granny shifting or speed/power shifting? How much do you let out of the gas in between shifts? You've gotta keep the RPMs up and the throttle going to chirp tires.

yep

You've gotta keep the RPMs up and the throttle going to chirp tires.

Good advice, the key is to not let the RPMS drop when you shift.

Other things that make it easier to chirp when shifting:

1) 3.73 or better gears - They will chirp even when you are not trying :D

2) Stiffer shocks and springs - if you are still running the soggy, pos soft stock suspension components you will probably find it very hard to chirp the tires when shifting.

i dont powershift for sake of my poor t5, but i hammer through the gears hard. say clutch in at 5200, i probably have it back in gear before 4900 but thats just a guess because i've never really watched the tach as i grab the next gear before. i know the shifts are quick though. as for the throttle, i let off when the clutch is out, and back on it just before engaging

my 93 lx that had full bolt ons, full exhaust and 3.73s and some suspension work would chrip the tires going from 2nd to 3rd when racing or speed shifting ( never wanted to try to power shift it from 2nd to 3rd for the sake of the stock t-5). I was prolly banging through the gears about like you and itd chrip them but by no means would break them loose from a 3rd gear roll

so my question is how are these nearly stock cars managing to spin through 3rd from a roll?

It's called crappy ass tires

When my GT was stock, i could chirp 2nd, 3rd and sometimes 4th gear if i nailed the shift right.

Then i changed from stock goodyears to Bridgestone potenza S-03's and now i can't even chirp 2nd gear anymore.

Chirping gears is breaking the tires loose due to loss of traction from driveline shock. HP does cause this, but look at the other end and poor traction with crappy tires is the other cause for chirps.

I concur. Same thing for me, I haven't even done my H/C/I yet, and I'm doing the same in 2nd & 3rd, because of the tires. :notnice:

well i just went for a drive, watched my rpms close. 1st to 2nd, shifting at 5200, rpms never dropped below 5000 until i was in gear, and it was just a tiny chirp. i do have brand new good tires (275 BFG kdw's) though, so that may be a big part i guess.

Exactly, my car spins alittle sometimes into 2nd but nothing to speak of going to 3rd or 4th. This is with 275/50 BFG DR's with alittle more power then you....I say dont worry about it. :nice:

Alot depends on tires like stated above.

With the MT ET Radials I never got 2nd to make a peep.
With my 275/60/15 Nitto's I can spin them a tad shifting into 2nd (on the street)
And With my crappy PepBoys 255/40/17's I can just about chirp 1st-5th, hell it spins all the way through 2nd like its not even in gear... lol

It could also be the clutch, little springs in the clutch take the initial "shock" of a hard shift(so you dont break crap)

I have to granny shift like a bastard on the streets or my Goodyear Eagles (275/40/17s) love to break loose under just about any condition.

I don't have a ton of HP, I would assume around 260ish, but I never drive hard on the street. Oddly enough, I chirp my 26" slicks at the track going into every gear including 4th.

Don't worry about the chirping, and dont use that as a way to judge how fast a car is... too many variables.

My car on the street will spin 1st obviousely, spin into second (not all the way through it unless I want it to), with a hard powershift into 3rd it rarely gets anything, and 4th wont make a noise.

At the dragstrip I am full throttle almost right after I am out of the hole, and a hard powershift into second, and I get a tiny bit of spin, but nothing to slow me down. No noise in any other gear.

Here you can hear the car spin some through first, and then into second which hurt the car pretty bad, but nothing like some people describe about blowing tires away through third with stock gears and a catback! But 285s might have something to do with that.

Yeah, fat tires and 18s are going to kill tire spin the same way that a really tall slick would. Taller tires couter act high gear ratios so even with 4.10s you probably wouldn't spin 18s too badly without big hp/tq numbers.

By contrast, the tires you see on my Welds in my sig pic are 265/50/15s....relatively low profile and short in overall height, so they spin well into 3rd and will chirp 4th with ease on the street, and at the track it's a lost cause.
