Clutch is gone???

I have a 2001 modded GT (supercharged, etc.). Last night my clutch felt a little soft and I could not shift into any gear. I thought the cable was the problem, but I looked at it today and it is working just fine. The clutch fork is moving like it should. Supposedly the clutch was replaced at 46k miles when the supercharger was installed. The car has not been raced or abused. Any ideas what may be the problem?

What type of adjuster does the clutch have? It may just be out of adjustment. If it's still a stock quadrant, I personally like to release all the tension on them and start over with the adjustment process. Reach up under the dash, release the pawl, and hold it while lowering the pedal to the floor. Let go and let the pedal come back up and it should be adjusted.

I believe the cable, quandrant, etc is all stock and only the actual clutch was upgraded. Not familiar with setting the adjustment on the clutch cable. I didn't know it could be adjusted. Only 30k miles on the clutch. It was replaced at 46k and I have 71k now.

I can not get the car in gear when the engine is running. But if I put the transmission in gear with the engine off and then start the car (clutch is fully depressed) I hear a dragging sound and I can smell the clutch start to burn.

with the engine off put your foot behind the pedal and pull the pedal towards you. then push it back in like normal. that should adjust it. I have never done this because shortly after i got my car i won a cable and adj. quad. at a car show but that is how i have heard to adjust it.

StangGT1995 mentioned something about reaching under the dash and releasing the pawl. Any idea what this means? I am not familiar with cluthes, quandrants, etc, but I am learning.

It sounds like your clutch is very out of adjustment. You should really adjust it every 10,000 miles to be safe. Releasing the pawl and all that is one way to do it.

The regular way is to do it with the car off. Put it in 1st. Pull the clutch pedal all the way towards you and then depress it all the way to the floor. Do that like 3 or 4 times. Usually thats enough.

Give it a shot and see how it feels after its adjusted. Let us know.

I highly recomend geting an afatermarket adjustable setup. I'm going to install the MM kit in my when I change my clutch in the Mach. I adjust the clutch every 2-3 oil changes. Its got over 80,000 on it now and still using the factory clutch.

Clutch is adjusted all the way out...I was able to release the pawl and it is adjusted to the bottom. Same problem exists. I either have a stretched cable or something broke in the clutch.

If the clutch isn't making a bunch of noise then the problem most likely isn't the clutch. The cable has probably just stretched. The stock quadrants are plastic and can also start to flex over time. Get a quadrant, cable adjuster, and a new OEM cable. I'd bet money that those three things will get rid of the problem.

Thanks for the info. I already ordered a new OEM cable from our local FORD dealership. The quadrant is broke or cracked, but it may be flexing like you said. The clutch does make a noise when the pedal is fully depressed, the transmissions is in gear, and the engine is running. It sounds like the clutch plate is dragging on the flywheel.

I looked under there earlier...there are no broken pressure plate fingers or anything that I can tell.

If you still have "About an inch of free play at the top", then it is still not adjusted correctly.

i just had the same problem you had except mine was worse. i was driving and all of a sudden my clutch pedal was gone and i couldn't shift into any gear unless the car was turned off. i thought it was my cable as well. i had it towed to my shop and to my bad luck it wasn't the cable at all but my cluth had blown apart and the pressure plate was locked in the engaged position. that is why my pedal was so bad. i do believe if you have put a new cable on and the problem still exsists, then you have a clutch problem. how much travel is there in you throwout bearing before it actually hits the pressure plate?

The OEM clutch is not adjustable. The quandrant/pawl is adjustable but as soon as I manually release it then the clutch returns to the top position with just about an inch of free play.

I bought a new Fidanza 2.1 clutch. It goes in tomorrow evening.

am i reading it correctly? your sayin that your quad. is broke? replace it then, and if that dont fix it then look at your clutch. a broken quad will destroy a clutch

Sounds like a clutch. I couldn't get cars into gear before and the disc was shot. Do not drive it like that...replace it asap so you don't screw the trans up.
