Clutch/Transmission ****ed up

Yea so I was driving down Windward Parkway tonight cruising at about 45mph when the light in front of me starts to change so i push in the clutch and then POP something snaps and the clutch slides in. Oh **** so I pull into the IBM parking lot, I turn the car back and and try and put it into 1st, no luck, so i slide it into third and this really nice grinding noise starts, and proceeds to get louder as i let the clutch out a little. I am so dissapointed becuase I just got my 4.10 installed today, they were fun for the 15 miles i got to use them.

So what all did I **** up?

Unfortunately, I think you have some troubles. Does the shifter want to go in gear? When 5th went in my 96, I was only able to get the car in fourth. I was just driving and heard a grind when going into 5th. Maybe your clutch cable snapped? What happens now when you try to use the transmission? Can you move the shifter through the gears when the car is off? Does the clutch pedal operate the way it should?

the clutch pedal is ALOT lighter than it used to be but it still has a little resistance so its not completely free moving, im not sure about having the car off, but with it on i cannot put it in 1st for a fact, it feels like something is blocking it, im not entirely sure about second, but i can put it in 3rd and 4th, but when i let the clutch out the grinding noise gets louder and louder (I have the clutch depressed as far as I can and it makes a nasty grinding noise in 3rd and 4th and only gets louder as I release the clutch)

Check the cable. When 5th went in my 96, there was a grinding noise when the clutch was pressed in. The shifter would not come out of 4th. If you are able to move the shifter around, you are in better shape than me.

Definitely could cause the grinding. If your cable broke or your clutch is roasted, you are essentially trying to put the transmission in gear without using the clutch. Don't forget, the gears in the transmission are spinning even when the car is in neutral. Attempting to shift into a spinning gear will cause the teeth to grind.

god i hope thats the case and my tranmission is fine.

becuase honestly i didnt do anything at the time that would cause the tranny to go out all i did was push the clutch in. Although earlier when i first got the car I had a nasty accident trying to get into fourth, but i dont think i caused any damage becuase i just reput it in and it worked fine, and i bounced off the rev limiter once racing a beamer (which i roasted) if you guys dont remember a couple weeks ago i talked about racing a 328i, well i screwed up and we ended up tieng up to 60, well this time we took it past 100 and I had about 10 cars on him

awesome i love bimmer rape stories!
i missed a few gears here and there since i had the car, no trouble really. Tell me, while the clutch still worked, did you notice a jittery start off the line when you would drive, like when engaging in first, did the clutch feel like it would slip a little? you might have just roasted the clutch and snapped the cable.

well I just figured I would give an update, I roasted my clutch. So i purchased a Spec stage 2 clutch and flywheel. I also now have a new qaudrant and a firewall adjuster. The firewall adjuster is awesome, i love being able to easily change were the clutch grabs, can set it perfectly where i want it.

But i was so happy when i got to re-race the bimmer. We didnt even go from a stop, more along the lines of starting at about 10-15mph, just imagine how bad it would have been if it had been from a stop. Then again the first time we raced i only had the CAI, and this race had the 4.10's and the flowmasters. Love the gears, absolutely love them
