Not really much bad on the cobras.. Stock is 305 hp but will put down anywhere from 260-270 stock.. IMRC need attention at high miles.. I love mine and it has never let me down yet.. I say go for it if the price is right!

If he has ever had a 5.0 mustang that's been modded a early model stock cobra may be dissappointing. I've had two a 1997 black on black cloth and a 1998 white on saddle leather. The latter of the two had a vortech s-trim on it making 465 rwhp. It was an absolute blast to drive. The first was a boltons only car and I was very disappointed with it. It drove good, comfortable, and did not give me any problems. As far as performance goes it was a little disappointing.
If I was looking for a car to drive alot the 4.6 cobra would be a good choice. If I was looking for a car to go fast in and raise a little hell on the week-end... fox-body w/ a pushrod engine all the way.

I had a 97. Great car. 305hp stock. all cobras are 5spds. mine got me anywhere from 17-20mpg depending on how i drove it, it was a high-rpm screamer and looked really sharp. Its easy to make them look GREAT with just some springs and a good set of wheels (10-10.5" wide out back) and with just a couple of mods (4.10's, exhaust, etc) they will turn in some pretty good times. mine went 13.5@105 on a VERY cold day and all i had done was a cat-back. downsides could be that aftermarket parts are more expensive than for Foxes, if it has black interior, wear will show more on the seats, etc...you have to run premium fuel, which is over $3 a gallon, and if it gets modded you will use more. but they are easy to find at a decent price with decent miles

heres what mine looked like. MAC progressive rate springs, 17x8 & 17x10.5 Chrome cobra R's, Magnapack Cat-Back, MAC CAI, PRO-5.0 shifter.

Cool. What 5spd is in there?
Does it have ABS, traction control and all that stuff?
What are the major differences from a same year GT?

T45 5spd, has ABS, no traction control

Differences from GT:
BODY/INTERIOR:
Unique front bumper cover (round fog lights)
Unique hood (centered, more pronounced nostrils)
Cobra/SVT badging
COBRA debossed in rear bumper cover (as opposed to MUSTANG GT)
COBRA on steering wheel (GT = running pony)

MECHANICAL:
4.6L DOHC 32V V8, 305hp 300tq, commonly known as the 4V 4.6 (GT = 4.6L SOHC 16V V8, or 2V 4.6, 215hp 285tq)
Trans and Rear shared with GT (T45 5-Speed/8.8 3.27 traction-lock rear)
13" front brakes (11" on GT)

I might be forgetting a couple things, but thats the bulk of it. There is no comparison performance-wise between a 97 GT and a 97 Cobra, stock for stock.

Redrooster did have a good point in that if your friend has ever owned or driven a modded 5.0, the Cobra may feel a little soft on power. The way it comes on is totally different. It isnt particularly strong in the low RPM's but it really screams past 3500. The Cobra will feel totally different compared to your car, probably a little weaker off the line. But it will also ride better and smoother, with less noise...partly because it weighs about 400lbs more. It depends on what he likes and wants out of a car. If $$ is an issue, he should consider a fox 5.0 in the $4000-5000 range which in some cases are either, somewhat modded or very clean. Then he can spend $ modding and personalizing it how he wants, as opposed to dropping $10-11k on a Cobra. But again, its all based on his taste.

The wife's "play" car:

DOHC cars are a blast to drive fast. In the upper rpm ranges they blow a pushrod motor away.

How are the 5spd T-45's? Are they a newer version of the T-5?

What is the best rear gear for a Cobra stock DOHC engine?

The t-45 is a decent trans. They are rated at 330 ft-lbs of torque. The only think they share with the T-5 is the shifter. Everything else is different.

All 96-00 Mustangs got the t-45. About midway through 2001, Ford switched to the T-3650 on mid-01 GT's. All '01 Cobras and Bullitts got the 3650

my brother has a stock 97 cobra, with an xpipe. The car is very torquey, and past 4k rpm the tires just break loose. Fast car for being stock, pulls hard, very comfy. Id probably take it over my car just because some slicks and little bolt ons and itll probably be low 13's or break 12's.
