Cold Air Intake Advice!!!

is it worth it to buy some CAI for my stock 95 GT if im not going to purchase a tuner...i might down the road at some point because im also planning on getting an O/R x pipe and catback exhaust system so it would probably be worth it eventually. i think im going to get "the beast" kit from pypes that comes with an O/R x pipe and there violater catback...but anyways i was thinkin about either the CAI that summit racing makes or the CAI that americanmuscle makes because there both very cheap and are probably the same as any name brand like k&n...so is it worth it to spend about 100$ on a CAI without a tuner???

You cant use a tuner on a 95 without buying a chip then you can buy a tuner that hooks to the chip but not worth the $700+ dollars.

#1. Make one your self, or get a cheap ebay one.
#2. Yes its worth it.
#3. You can tune a 94/95 with a tuner

I am going to disagree with Adam. I put a CAI on my car stock and it made a BIG FAT ZERO except now it made an annoying "air" sound. From experience DONT buy one. At BEST it will only work better when its very cold out. On my z28, it resulted in noticeable difference in power. On the GT nothing.

If he plans on doing work to the car in the future its a good starting point... and while he is at it he would have a nice new air filter and he can clean the maf. plus the stock system looks like crap

Dont the the legitimate CAI kits (MAC, etc) say they offer like a slight increase in HP? Dont know exact numbers but I think it was something relatively low like 3 - 5HP on some apps. Dont quote me on that. I think even if it isnt a huge gain, if hes running a stock airbox and filter, it definitely would improve airflow depending on the kit. Though if you want to get a nice exhaust, which is more noticeable in the SOTP meter, you might want to save the buck fifty or so you could spend on a CAI and just put it toward the exhaust. Just my opinion. Either way its your car so have a blast with it.

Also Itkix, you can buy several tuners for under 700 including the Tweecer RT and the new Quarter horse which looks even better and costs less.

Another option is to get a k&n and just take off the air silencer. Don't expect any power from a cai, but its kinda just something we all do anyways. Bolt-ons individually hardly do anything so ideally its nice to do a few of them combined like cai, pulleys, and exhaust and then you will feel the difference.

A few things to consider when talking about the CAI mod

If one was totally OEM
then
They would gain in 3 different ways

1) Less restriction to airflow with that rubber doo dad gone
2) Less restriction to airfllow with a more efficient filter such as a K&N
3) Last but most important .............

If the CAI does indeed draw in fresh air from outside the engine bay ...

When it is cooler, the air is more dense ... thus ... More HP

Now ... this is not subjective ... an opinion ... or a topic open to debate

It is one of those science kinda things ... Don't ya know

Also ... Just as Keith said above
Its not like you're gonna gain MEGA HP with such a mod

When done on the cheap
such as is possible with a homemade CAI

I feel this mod is VERY HIGH on the list of

Bang for the buck spent mods

But, the stock system is a cold air intake setup

Air flow restrictions quite likely are not an issue with a stock motor. I think one would have to see a vacuum in the intake tube to conclude there is a flow restriction

Looks of course are a subjective matter

However, I'm prepared to defer to Grady

Yes ... You are correct in the OEM system draws from the fender

Like you ... I also think a stocker won't benefit as much as one
at say 250rwhp or better

But ... less restriction would be better
and
More dense air means more O2 in the hole to burn

Honestly ... VERY FEW of ANY of the mods peeps refer to as ...........
bolt on mods ... offer much of a gain

I mean ... You do em ALL and you still ain't gained much

Will a cold air give you more "power", yes b/c it is less restrictive than the stock intake pipe.

However, if you want to make more power down the road save your money and build the motor from the bottom up.

You want just some quick, bolt on power then get a CAI, TB, etc. Just don't expect to go out and run 10's.
