Comp Cams Stage 2; springs really necessary?

My daughter bought a set of Stage 2 Comp Cams camshafts for her '02 GT. I have read some posts (somewhere) where people have installed the cams without replacing the stock valve springs. I have also read that piston to valve clearances can be very tight with these cams but I don't know if that necessarily means new springs are required. Does anyone have any experience with these cams and stock springs?

AFAIK, Comp pretty much demands upgraded springs be used with their "Stg 2" cams.

Springs won't address PTV concerns. For that you need a degree wheel, dial indicator and patience.

it would be best bet to get the springs and have the cams degreed properly. those cams need to be degreed on the dot or you run the risk of ptv problems. i had those cams in my 02gt and i had ptv problems but without springs. idk who installed them either they were on the car already. bent the valves and hit the pistons. had to rebuild.

IMO stick with stage 1 if you don't want to replace the springs and you still need to degree the stage 1s as well

The other thing you can do is call MHS and ask Nick if he'll degree them for you. He charges $150 to degree cams purchased from him (installs new cam gears and writes the intake centerline on the gear face), then for another $50 you can get the adjustable crank gears and she'd be set. It's likely less expensive to have Nick degree them that it would be to take them in to be installed and have the installer degree them while in the engine.

Not sure if he'd degree cams not purchased from him, but it is definitely worth asking

I have degreed probably 30 sets of Comp 270 now and all had the pass side cam advanced.

I also agree with the above that the Comp 262 is a better choice for the stock motor than the 270.

I wouldn't run the 270's. I've seen a lot of guys have issues with them in the past, even degreed. See if you can send them back and pay a restocking fee, or trade them for the 262's. The 262's have made over 300rwhp on a few PI cars.

I'd call Nick and get his cams or have him spec out a set of cams for your daughter.
