I usually drive my car just weekends and putt around, but there are those (often) times when I just have to have more power. I've picked out a cam, but I don't know if that will satisfy me. What about nitrous, could I hook it up right, and shoot 150+ hp jets? Supercharger is too expensive, so are the heads I would want, so this is what I've got to go off of....

Honestly i highly DO NOT recomend that if you dont know what your doing, youll have to rebuild the engine each time you use it, and if you really mess up youll have to buy heads anyway...my advice, put what money you can away in a jar you cant get into (if you dont have good self control) every month, it may not be instant but soon enuf youll be able to afford the heads you want with out the possability of blowing the engine in such a beautiful car, but thats just my opinion, if it was some forigien P.O.S. id say go for it, eat your heart out, but it kills me to see nos on classic muscle cars

Run your new cam first and see how you like the power......A new cam can make worlds of a difference, especially if your upgrading from stock. As for nitrous, In my opinion when tuned right, it can put as little stress as running N/A. What kind of pistons are you running? Cast, forged, or hypereutectic? Flat tops, dished? Im running a 100 shot on flat cast pistons and thick main bearings. I do have extra strenght provided on my bottom end. That is something you may want to consider. Yes you can set up the nitrous system. I would start with a kit such as the edelbrock performer 50, 75 and 100 shot pills. You can start real small and get the feel for it before you upgrade to the big pills. I would strongly reccommend pming 10secgoal, he is a encyclopedia when it comes to nitrous.

either the NOS snipper kit or the Super Powershot. dont get greedy with it. as long as you back the timming and run premium gas you should be ok. I have the NOS bigshot plate on my 289 set at 300.

do some mods that will give you real HP/TQ.
Using nitrous can really shorten the life of any engine.
I remember when I dissasembled my old 351c that had nitrous, most of the pistons had cracks running up the skirts, an accident waiting to happen.
No more nitrous for me, (or at least in my car that is ha ha)

My engine is just "stock rebuild". I assume that means cast pistons and other 'weak' parts?

i wouldnt stray beyond a 150 shot with your SB, and just make sure your fuel system is up to snuff and supplying ample fuel... then i wouldnt worry much. but dont be fooled into thinking its a cheap fix. Bottle refills add up big time, and the price goes up yearly, plus accesories...A bottle heater and a window switch are a must, a multistep would be a good idea for a street car.

See how you like the cam, then consider the N2O.

Personally.. I say go for it. I wouldn't jet it above +150HP.

N2O is plenty safe so long as you ensure you have a good tune. And contrary to popular belief, you don't need to be an expert to make sure you have a safe (conservative) tune.

Here's what you need to do to make sure you have a safe tune.

1) Fuel pressure. Make sure your fuel pump can keep up. Easiest way to check is to install a fuel pressure guage, and then use the nitrous with the bottle valve closed. The car will bog badly when the N2O kicks in, but all you care about is that fuel pressure guage. Make sure it doesn't drop below 4PSI.
2) Jetting. Use whatever jets are reccomended by the company. They are generally pretty conservative.
3) Timing. Retard your timing 1.5* for every 50HP.
4) Bottle pressure. Make sure you do not use the N2O if your bottle pressure is above 1100PSI. (Hot day in the sun with a full bottle)

Only other advice I can give is to make sure you only use the N2O when the engine RPM is above 2500.

Depends on the system. But it wouldn't be too hard to make it so that 95% of people wouldn't notice it.

on my 66 we are going to shoot 150-200 hp into it. It has forged pistons, rods and crank. The motor is a 347 with a Currie 9in and AOD. AC, PS, power disk brakes and front coil overs. Sorry to hijack the thread but this has been a 7 month project and should be finished this week.

I think with my setup we should be pretty safe and reliable.

I was told 50-75 HP shot is safe with only forged pistons. Forged crank and rods will handle the bigger stuff.

I am sure others will be more knowledgable than me on this.

Just keep the hood closed and only show them tail lights and nobody will ever know. Thats a slick setup.

I don't claim to understand anything about the Nitrous world accept that it certianly has been romanced alot in the movies and everyone seems to want it even if it's not really practical for the way they use there car. As far as stealth and mild use though, I seem to recall a while back that K&N? (or someone) made a unit that actually is the bottom of your air filter and another one that is actually hidden within the intake manifold and essentially invisable from the extrior. Maybe they are total crap I don't know but for what it is worth I'm mentioning it.

Yeah, that looks like the one I was thinking of Woody. In fact here are both the units.
