Cost For New Paint Job For 1995 5.0?

When I got my car this past Summer the paint was already fading on the hood and roof. However 8 months later up to now the since the Fl sun beats down on it and now the hood has grey streaks and it looks alot worse. So I would like a new paint job, I don't want a crappy AAMCO one nor a showroom style. Would $1,500 be resonable to expect to pay just to repaint it the same color, black?

Its already black and I want to get it repainted the same color, as opposed to getting it repainted a different color which is more costly

The problem with black is that bodywork has to be ABSOLUTELY perfect. It is not a forgiving color.

with light body work (nothing major), and a complete respray probably aroung 3k.

I've painted for almost 40 years as my profession. So I'll tell you what I can.

Depending on where you are in the country, the price will vary. All jobs are based on a "flag hour" rate. A flag hour is used to pay the tech that does the work on your car. Let's say a shop wants to charge you for 40 flag hours for just the paint (this does not include the tear down of the vehicle, meaning door handles, belt mouldings, mirrors, etc... being removed).

In my particular market, the going flag hour rate charged to the customer is $50 per. It WILL vary depending where you are.

So let's say all that you want is the paint, no bodywork, and you will do all of the tear down of the vehicle yourself. The cost for the LABOR will be roughly $2000.

Then you will have a material rate charged, in our area, it is $28 per hour. So $28x40=$1120. This charge is in addition to the labor rate charged.

So you have $3120 if you do everything besides paint. It ain't cheap.

If you want to learn to do it yourself, let me know, I'll help you out as much as I can. It really is a craft though. I've worked with dozens of painter's helpers over the years, and there just are people that can't figure it out.

Only one way to find out though.....

I wouldn't advise using the really cheap shops, not even because you'll probably get a scab technician, but more so that they will use the absolute cheapest sht paint there is on the market. It won't last.

A full paint job takes some serious consideration, but like anything else on our cars, you can learn to do it if you want.

Stykthyn is correct about the difficulties of black. It shows every problem the body has. Done right (@RacEoHolic330 ), it IS the schizzle.

When I got my quote a couple years ago it was for 3500$-5k(no major body work needed and no color change). Changing colors and more of a "hot rod-show quality" job was 10k. If your car is just faded and needs no body work(unlikely) you might get it done for 2k. My advise is to check around and look at the paint shops work. It truly can be a "get what you paid for" thing.

juan- where are you in Fl? There are a few of from there and can maybe point you in the right direction as to picking a shop. If you are in S Fl, Peerless in Ft Lauderdale does one of the best jobs.

I had my Fox repainted around 2000....

Total cost was $4K. I had it repainted black, as well as a lot of new trim and molding replaced that was still available from Ford new.

Unfortunately...it could use another repaint. Not because it didn't hold up but because I probably could have taken care of it better.

man you guys dont wanna know what i paid for my paint job, its good to know peeps and do your own work... that being said.. i agree with everyone..

if doesnt sound like you need a paint job, sounds like you just need work done to you existing paint.. maybe new clear or just buffing etc, ... unless you have damage or missing paint you didnt mention. If thats all you need , i bet that you can get done for your budget or less. and yeah black shows everything.. where as a cheaper paint job/doby work will hide on certain colors, black shows everything so if you try and do a cheap job it could look horrible.

go on some local forums or find a local stang club etc and see who they recommend, they might even be able to point you to a smaller shop that specializes in stangs and can save you $$.

Most of the paint still looks nice on the sides, and front and back bumpers and right side front fender. The hood and left side fender is where it is the worst. the roof and trunk are faded

I've come to the realization that I don't even like to touch a full repaint for less than $3000 these days. It's alot of hard work and most people have no clue what good quality work and materials cost.
Here's one that I'm proud of that we just completed. It was a high end project and was completely disassembled and brought to us for paint. Our final price for paint, glass, restoration of the mouldings , trim, quarter windows, reassembly of the exterior and installation of the strips was around $6K.
Now its at my buddy's shop getting wired and the restored drivetrain and interior reinstalled.

Oh boy! Your clear has delaminated.

What this means is.....it needs to be stripped completely. You can't just remove the peeling clear, if you do, you'll leave a real ugly die back pattern on your panels.

Bright side? It's not that tough to do, but does take time. If you would like to do it yourself, pm me and I'll walk you through the steps.

There is no recovery from this though, the old paint has to go.

Sweet man. 6K isn't bad at all, kind of cheap depending how much your shop did. I've been in shops that would charge in the five figures for that kind of work, easily five figures.
