Cowl Cover Question

Just bought a 1970 Grande Coupe 351W - 2V. Really good body, but cowl has a leak(as if this is anything new....). Anyway, I have read a bazillion posts about how to fix or cover your cowl. I'll fix it later, but for now I cant seem to find a cover that scews on. I found a magnetic one on mustangsunlimited.com, but I want a clear one that screws on. Yeah, that's my point. I want one that screws on, but I can't seem to find one for a 1970 model.

Can you possibly make one? I bought some plexiglass at either Home Depot or Lowes, can't remember, for another project.

You da' man 2nd Stang. I'll stop by Home Depot to see if I can fab one myself. If not, i'll end up going with the magnetic one on ebay(as strange65 suggested). Apparently, the faster you go, the more pressure is created on the cowl, consequently decreasing the probability that the thing might fly off. (*sigh* all I need is a lawsuit with some dude (who probably drives a Porsche) who got blinded on the interstate because my cowl cover hit his windshield )

You really want to get something that has those spring loaded fastners (4 of them) as they seal the best. I use a cowl cover during storage. My Stang doesn't see the road when it rains.

The cover I bought for my 67 is also spring loaded. You push down and turn to secure it. What year did they start making removeable cowls?

I think the '69-'70 cars had removeable upper cowl panels.

I went to home depot and bought a sheet of plexiglass, single sided weather stripping, 1/4" rubber flat washers, and some 1/4" hardware(cost $20 for everything) I'm going to take the plunge and try to fab one.

Anybody know the best way to cut plexiglass? I have a jig saw, a dremel, and a good ole' hacksaw.

I would use the jigsaw . To avoid cracks clamp it down and use tape over the area you want to cut, like they do on a counter top.

Dremel is the way to go with a file type bit jigsaw will crack it IMHO

If the cowl is removable, you would be better off to simply remove it and fix the leak to keep rust from spreading everywhere.

Yep! The cowl is definitely removable. I will eventually repair whatever it is that is causing me so much pain and anguish, but I need a quick fix until then. With this Monterey/Salinas, CA weather, I don't have a clue what will happen next...you know...earthquake, rain, hail storm, thunderstorms, SNOW, etc.....absolute craziness!

I can't believe I'm the first to say this, but if you just bought a car that you know has a leaky cowl and therefore has an as of yet undetermined amount of rust to it that you plan to band aid so you can immediatly start driving 100 miles per hour then I think the least of your concerns should be be getting sued by a guy in a Porsche in case it flies off.

Your top concern right now should be getting your will in order. Do you have an address for us to send flowers or is there a donation you prefer we make in your name?

Wow, Pakrat. You sound like my dad. *sigh* I realize this is off topic, but I'll let you self righteous New Englanders continue to speak down on everyone else. I appreciate all the technical advice you gave me though. It really helped....Really.
