cowl question

hey iv done this question before but no answer because didnt type in the year of car tried to fix but did not work well still leaks a little not bad but it leaks and I redid the floors and dont feel like redoing them so the question is can you buy acowl for 71 mach1 or patch kit its pretty far gone and i do alot of welding and etc. but it has alot of pin holes in it so reply would be helpful thanx.

Anyway, I don't know jack **** about the '71-'73 parts availability, perhaps someone else knows.

First make sure it is your cowl that is leaking.

There are three main areas to check for leaks in the front area of the car. You need to check all three areas separately and in order.

1. Check the cowl for leaks. Pour some water directly into the cowl, making sure not to get water around the windshield area. The water should drain out each side behind the front wheels. You can also look into the cowl area with a flashlight and a hand held mirror.

2. Check the windshield seal. Run some water around the windshield seal, making sure not to allow water to run over the door jambs and door glass. This is probably the greatest cause of leaks into the front of the car. A 35+ year old windshield seal is probably rotted and no longer weather tight. Also, if the windshield has been replaced or pulled recently, after market windshield gaskets are notorious for leaking - make sure to get the FORD seal if you replace the windshield seal.

3. Check the door jambs and door glass channel. Run water directly on the doors, especially allowing water to run down the glass and into the door itself. There are drain holes inside the doors that can get blocked.

Cover the floor boards with some newspaper (it will show even small drips of water very easily) and check after each test.

well i know the cowl is leaking becuase i had to take out the rusted vent .thats not good it had ahole size of a bowling ball in it its been a real pain this car has peved me off so much im thinkin of scrappin it but have to much invested ya know by the way that guy dont know how to read Red Neck

:SNSign: lol thats not funny by the way I drop a pint of fiber glass down in the cowl with matt to day hopefully it seals right cant do anything more un less redo the hole cowl .god hepe us if fales im not no young buck

There is no cowl replacement or repair kit for 71-73. For a major repair, your best bet is a doner car or doing some creative sheetmetal forming and patch welding. Either way, to do the job right you will have to remove the dash pad, hood, fenders, misc. wiper parts and windshield to gain access to drill the 300 spot welds that hold the exterior cowl vent on.

I'm not sure the fibreglass route is a good one...where is the rain water going to go now that the drain holes are full of resin?

Hot dang, as I think they say in your parts.

Wow, 300 spotwelds!? I'm glad I've got a '66, arent there only 140 something?

I'm sorry to see someone pour something in there to prevent leaks... tis a shame.

yep thought of that there are still drain holes in the cowl that go to the fenders and so i think i have that coverd?

OK so I don't post allot here but here goes:

In order to try and be polite here I will try and sum up the previous posts and give some advice. In order for people to take your questions seriously, they need to be able to understand the post in one or two reads. Without punctuation and capitalization it is very hard to read. "ive" is harder to read than 'I've". You are asking for free help. Spend the time to make it easy to read.

To fix you problem, the idea of dumping in a pint of resin and hope all is well is not a close second to the best way to do the job. For one you can block drain holes ment to be there and for another you can create places for the water to pool and create more rust holes.

Not knowing the layout of the 71-73, I cannot offer specific repair advice but try to remove things under the dash and if possible most of the dash and get to the cowl leak from below. You might be able to stop the leak for some time but unless you totally remove the cowl cover as the above picture show, you will not be fixing the problem. You will be band-aiding the issue.

BTW real rednecks would:
1. Not be caught dead using a computer
2. Not be caught dead asking for help
3. Wouldn't own a running car, truck maybe
4. Wouldn't care if the truck leaked.
5. Would be too drunk to drive even if he had a truck and it leaked.
