I don't think that such a swap is possible under California rules.

I have read that it is but you have to put every emissions part from the donor vehicle into the car its going in. They also said that it is best to go to a referee before you do the swap and get advise on what they will be looking for. If you get the VIN off the donor vehicle or one identical to it that will help the referee guide you and then tech the car when you bring it to them.

This part.

It's a convoluted mess.

Take the 15-20 grand you'll spend on the swap and move to a more 'car friendly' state.
If that is not an option, I'd contact a referee like was suggested.

I live here in SoCal. I researched this swap a while back, but to to swap a Coyote into a 94-95 chassis. Ford sells a standalone PCM that's designed for a swap into cars like ours, that have a 'return-style' fuel system. But that PCM is not smog legal in California, so you can't just buy a crate engine and the associated parts. You need to get an engine and PCM from a donor car, AND take all of the related emissions parts from that car. Here's a link to a forum post that details many of the things you will need for the swap:

Project Coyote Notch interior swap IRS CA smog legal

That's the bad thing about pearl paints, they tend to be camera shy. My first time participating in a car show in 8 years. Came ill prepared, and my son had to suffer. I can stand and talk about the project for 8 hours, but my son was toast after 4 hours. He resorted to single 1 syllable...
www.svtperformance.com

Check out the whole thread for more info. This person removed the floor of his Fox and welded in the floor from the Coyote, and also swapped in the Coyote's interior. This may be more than you're willing to do. Also note that you'll have to have the swapped car inspected by a BAR referee, and they require proof that the Coyote's PCM code has not been modified. Meaning you'll have to install the Coyote's PATS system and anything else the PCM requires to run. So again, it's not easy to do a Coyote swap here in CA.

I’d just do a year correct injected 302W with a CARB approved blower and move on.

Man California used to be a hot rodder’s wet dream now it’s just the wet spot that no one wants to sleep on.

I don't typically mind emissions rules. But preventing people from using newer cleaner powerplants makes no sense. My car passed nj emission standards (when we had them for 95 and older cars) with no cats and a terminator swap.

IMO, it should be a sniffer check only. So long as it meets or exceeds OEM specification for the model and year, press on with pride.

I've already tried but moved back to calif due to work. The money was better in California, plus the wife wasn't happy in Texas.

It still blows my mind. I grew up in SoCal. In HS, I drove a 58 Chevy pickup truck with a 68 Vette 327 and wheels. Straight pipes, 3 on the tree, passenger door roped closed, primer grey, and at least two people riding in the open truck bed all smoking what looked like cigarettes at 90+ mph.

Can't even swap an engine anymore.

What goes on in Cali could easily happen in any state so I'm all for the EPA to be stripped down. Nothing about politics. Just be lucky you're from Jersey like I am and can run no cats all day..
