as far as breaking the engine in goes:

I wouldn't let it idle with no load on it for very long. The first hundred miles of a new engine are the most important ones.

I've found that the best way to break a motor in is to get on the highway (at night) and get in 3rd the floor it to put pressure on the rings. I bring it up pretty high in the rpm band and then let it compression brake to pressure the rings. Then the next time I do it I go up higher in the rpms and let it come back down. I drive like that for a good 40 or 50 miles initially. Then I'll take it to 4th and somewhat do it (speeds a factor here). Change the oil after that and check your filter.

Then after that while I'm driving around town I'll make sure to let the engine do the braking and I'll get on it a good bit (coming onto the freeway and what not). You want pressure on your rings.

If you just let your motor idle your rings may never seat correctly and you'll have a less efficient engine. The first 100 miles or so are a crucial point in determining the power of your engine.

Always worked well for me. I'm sure there are other methods

Also, you prolly know this...but make sure you have a good tune on it before you get it going.
