Decision on buying a 91 LX 5.0 AOD

I am looking into a fox body mustang to toy with. Maybe keep it stock for a few months, then start small upgrades to it. I have a neighbor who has a 91 5.0 LX hatch... the only downside I see in the car is the AOD tranny. I would want 5 speed.

I can probably pick the car up for 3,000 and it has about 100k on it (I have to check it all out yet). Does anyone have any experience swapping an AOD to a 5 speed in the fox body? How much effort is it? is it worth it, or should I just buy a 5 speed from the get go?

I have searched in this forum for the info and have found some great threads, just wondering if it worth the work.

The car is nice, but nothing special.

3,000 for a mustang with 100k isn't too bad, if the car drives nice and the body is good. I personally would get a 5spd to start off with. It all depends how much you have to spend on the car after you get it too. You won't stay satisfied with the auto for very long thats for sure.

A friend and I did it on another fox I had. I see the full setups all the time for around 700. The labor was rather a pain, but I think the next time around will go a bit faster. If you have it done at a shop, I can see them charging you quite a bit. IMO if I ever get a AOD again. I'd rather do the whole 3k stall and lentech valve body than do a swap again. Sticks can be fun to drive, but a built AOD is just as fun. Consider building out the AOD. You wont regret it.

you can either start out with 0-60 times of 7+ with the aod, and get beat by other cars that a ghey, or a low to mid 6 second car with the 5spd. You can obviously make the aod fast but thats going to take some money and besides its fun ripping gears.

I did the T-5 conversion on my 91 coupe. I got the complete set up for $900, that included everything, even a new King Cobra clutch, machined flywheel and a B&M Ripper shifter. The tranny was rebuilt with about 5000 miles on it also.

The actual conversion isnt to bad, theres a few good sites on how to do it. Installing the pedals to me was probably the worst part because its such an awkward position up under the dash. The pedals maybe took me 2 hours to swap out. The actual transmission change over was pretty straight forward. If you've got all the parts its easy. Try and get the 5 speed wiring harness, that makes everything plug and play.
