I just brought back my 69 fastback from the media blaster completely stripped down and now I don't know what to do next. I have enough cash right now to get it running (lacks a carb, axles, driveshaft, roll cage...etc.) and get new exterior pieces such as the bumper, drip rail crhome, and original louvers or I can get a nice paint job and wait on some more cash for the rest of the stuff previously mentioned. I am thinking about getting it running first since I am a 19 year old college student and have been desperately wanting to drive it with the 508 stroker in it to keep me motivated. The exterior pieces on it now don't necessarily need replaced right now but I want the car to be as mint as possible. Any thoughts on what to do????

From experience I would say do the finish first then get is running.
Or you never seem to get back to it.

But it would be Fun to drive.

I know its a pain to keep it drivable and improve it.

I agree. Paint it first.

Or you will be taking it back to have it blasted again.

Would getting it primered and then painting it later on down the road (6 months) be ok or would it hurt the primer driving it around like that?

Primer absorbs moisture . It started rusting before the media blaster was shut off. Get it to a good shop to be wiped down with solvent and painted; preferably yesterday.

I used red oxide primer on some off road cars. It keeps moisture out. I really didn't care about the finish as trashing around the rocks and dirt would take a toll on any finish. I think there are better primers now than the old red oxide primers.

You are right about there being better primers that do not absorb moisture as bad, if at all. But, any primer is not paint or there would be no distinction. I'm sure it would be more prone to oxidize and only cost him more in the long run. More important, however, is the fact that he said he just had the car media blasted. It needs to be seam sealed, etc. immediately as Mustangdave said or he's asking for real problems. I agree with those who have said paint it now. Impatience generally only costs you mega bucks down the road redoing things.

You need to get some protection on that body!!!!!!!!!!!

At the very least, have it epoxy primered ASAP. When properly applied, the epoxy primer will stand up to the elements for quite some time. Applying seam sealer also seems like a must. Don't hesitate to do something!
