To anyone that rides dirt bikes, I'm curious. My neighbor offered me his 1986 honda cr500 for 1000 bucks today, he'd probably drop it to 800. I'd rate the condition as used, what you might expect from a 21 year old toy, that with no doubt has been beat on, but what else are they good for? Good deal or not? He said it was stroked, newer crank, rod and piston. I took it for a ride and scared myself on it, (in a good way) thing had some serious go to it. Just riding around the neighborhood on the street it lifted the front off the ground in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd with just a crack of the throttle, I wasn't even trying to mess around.
Seemed a bit excessive in the power dept. for a newbie, but respecting it can go a long way as far as not getting hurt on something like that.
Almost wrote a check on the spot for it, but decidecd to wait a while as I was in no way in the market for a dirt bike, the devil on my left shoulder said go for it, but the angel on my left shoulder told me to hold off. Told him I'd call him in a month, if I was till interested.

What do you think, go for it or not?

1000k for a bike that old, is not a good deal in eyes.

FWIW-I bought a 90 125(granted smaller) in 95 for 1,500$, and a buddy bought a 92 250 that same year for 1,800. Dirt bikes dont hold value and drop fairly quick...after a point they do tend to level out but 1k seems steep to me. The biggie isnt the motor but the susp. tech. like going from dual rear shocks to a single rear shock or forks design, then the brakes go from drum in rear to disk.

He prob. has alot tied up in the motor but its going to be REALLY hard to get any of that out from a 86 model. Honestly, its prob. more like a 500$ bike unless your just going to run straight threw a neighborhood and not do any dirt/trail riding.

That sounds like an uncommon (esp. for the year) motor most had gone to the 125-250 size 2 strokes, if its and enduro then they had some funky sizes. 4stroke? or 2stroke? I am guessing 4stroke, just saying its going to be harder to find stuff if its an odd motor size
