Do All C4's Just Do That?

Hey all--

Quick question. The C4 on my 66 GT has been seeping a bit more than usual (ah, spring, when the transmission fluid rises to leak onto my garage floor!) It is seeping from the grommit where the "arm" goes into the tranny. I've been told that most c4's leak from this spot. True? I've also been told that this grommit is only replaceable from the inside, requiring dropping the tranny. True?

C-4's leak. Just stock up on Type F transmission fluid.


Dropping that thing is a pain, it's heavy when it rolls off the jack and onto your shoulder.

Mine's leaked for years, I've given up on worrying about it. Kinda like old Harleys, they're just marking their territory.

Seriously though, keep that sucker cool. If it gets warm, there is a purge vent on top of the case, and it will dribble out, making a mess. If you don't already have one, look into a auxilliary cooler, they are cheap, and easy to install, your tranny will thank you.

well, im on my second c4 car now, and both have leaked.

The 65's previous owner spent $600 (i know the guy got ripped) to have all new seals put in the c4, cleaned out, new tranny pan gasket, and IT STILL LEAKED, though very slightly.

Now my 67 has a c4 with a shift kit in it, when I bought it I was told it was rebuilt a year ago (which I believe, its the cleanest thing on the car lol) and it still leaks.

So, im with the "c4's just leak" crowd.

They don't ALL leak - - - - - - only the one's with fluid in them! If a C4 doesn't leak, it's out of fluid!!!

Seriously, I did get my old one selaed up once for about 6 months, then it started dripping again from the same place yours is. Very common. They also leak at the dipstick tube o-ring, lines, F & R seals, and pan.

It looks like you dont have to drop the tranny to change that seal. Maybe just lower the rear about an inch.

If only transmissions were like worn out engines. Some 50 weight and a lot of prayers kept more than one vehicle of mine on the road.

Good to know that I am not alone. I've heard the Harley joke before. I personally like telling people it is excess testerone dripping off all that horsepower!

hmmm that sounds like MY 76 bronco, couldnt keep oil pressure in her for the life of it, and i thought the c-4 in my mustang leaked! the bronco flat out pukes!! it has not run in almost a year now and every time we move it in my buddies shop there is a 6" diameter puddle of the red type F. HA!

another vote for C4s just leak. mine does just that, even though its got some miles on it, its always leaked and works fine otherwise

You can change that seal without dropping the transmission., It's just an "O" ring there on the shift shaft. You will have to jack the car up, pull the pan from it, then( if I remember correctly) remove the valve body. You should then be able to see the other end of the shaft. I think it's just got a single nut holding it in place. Remove the nut and before pulling the shaft out, observe how the shaft interacts with any other parts in there. Pull the shaft out, and replace the "O" ring. Then put it all back together and pray to God the new one doesn't leak.

Mine has never leaked there. The vent tube makes the outside get nasty though. I wonder if you could install a small coffee can or something to the end of the vent tube? Would this still allow it to vent?

You could also run a vacuum hose up the the carb from the transmission vent, it'll accomplish the same thing.
