seems like mine does this every now and then, it will go all the way to the L on the temp gauge, just happened right now all i did was beat on it once or twice , its night so it should be cool
It's hard to trust the stock gauge. Id install an aftermarket one just to make sure of the temperature. In the meantime you could try replacing the radiator cap and thermostat if they are old.
well last nite wasn't so bad, it stayed in the middle of gauge to upper part even when on freeway, idling was bad, it used to never go past the A, now its going to the L, i checked at my friends shop tho the fan use to kick on at 217 degrees at the A, i think i should check if thats still working i just have a stock style radiator, , could i get a 180degree thermostat?
If truly running hot on the highway and in town, and all ancillary items are up to par, it sounds like the radiator is simply not rejecting heat like it should (like RC said).
I would want to diagnose further, but based upon what I remember here, it sounds likely.
A cooler rated stat is not likely to fix anything, but rather just give you a few more minutes before it reaches these temps.
Yeah, since you are in cali and it' doesn't get below freezing very often, I would try 70/30 or 80/20. Water does a much better job at conducting heat.
