Sadly my 01 GT Vortech V2 Aftercooled has met its fate on one hot summer day in Phoenix.

Time for build

Now been in contact with MMR for some time about building the block, car is already at Fox Body Performance in Phoenix which by the way so far
Cars already being stripped, supercharger going to Vortech for a go over and minor rebuild, and I need best guidance on the build!! Im staying 2 valve and not going 5.4 because from what I read, all accessories need to be replaced along with wiring, so budget wise, not too wise, for me atleast.

I need a streetable, daily driver, with as much horsepower as I can get with a budget of about 5k for the engine. Maybe more if I can make this car REALLY juicy.. I already have money allotted for the shop and the dyno afterwards... Sooooooo, 5k + maybe!!!!!!! Tell me how to get MONDO horsepower!!! I already have the blower so we're off to a good start... CHIME IN GUYS!!! I WANNA PUT THE RICERS AWAY!!!!!

Guy at MMR trying to convince me to go stroker

Im attaching a pic of the quote ($9,000) from them and some of my ride just because I know everyone likes pictures

Tell me what you guys think??? I think its more cost effective just ordering the short block from them for about $3,000 and havin the shop put on Cams and Heads..

Also, anyone do better engines than MMR? Ive read good reviews on them..

Basically need ideas... Thanks guys!!

Also, If I posted in the wrong section, please let me know!! First time posting on any forum...

Maybe look into building up an aluminium block from a 99 cobra

The build sheet you posted looks like a solid way to have a foundation to make some power. It wouldn't be a bad idea to throw in the ARP headstuds too.

You will likely want to upgrade the blower with an Si or T-trim impeller and volute as well while it's at Vortech. That will help get some more airflow through the engine.

I would call Modular Performance and have John build you a short block. John Tymensky was on the development team for Ford when the modular was designed. He is the best modular engine building in the country. Your actual best bet would be to e-mail John, because it is a 1 man show at his shop and he always does not have the time to answer the phone. But if you e-mail him, he will get back to you pretty quick. Just tell him what you have, what kind of budget, and how much power you are looking to make.

For heads and cams, Modular Head Shop is the only way to go. Nick McKinney has proven time and time again to be the man to talk to about ported modular heads and camshafts.

Thanks for the reply! I will give you kudos as well because Ive seen on your site and your definitely more than the "Buy our bolt ons and go" guys... Shortly after I got that invoice, MMR sent another with the ARP headstuds added on.

As for the supercharger, THATS WHAT IM TALKING ABOUT!!!!!!!!! Thats the kind of advice Im looking for!!!!!!!! I would have had no idea and to find that out later on down the road about the impeller and volute, would have done me no good. Its not like I can send any of this back. Once the builds done its done!! 2 really good pointers and NOTED! Thank you

YES YES YES!!!! I love the internet!!! You guys are telling me the things I need to know. I could have sifted through the forums for another couple months and not have come across this kind of info!! Ive been working with a guy named Nergal at MMR.. Sounds real knowledgeable but I absolutely didnt know anything about John. Ill be sure to get him involved on the build and maybe swing my business over his way.

As for Modular Headshop, I just checked the site, and will look into there products. Ive read alot of info on Trickflow products and they seem to have it together but Im always up for putting in the best if Im flushing the bank account Thank you for the info!!!!!!

If you can afford the BOSS block, DO IT!!!!!! The boss short blocks are the best thing since sliced bread.

I know a few people that are making some very serious power on the boss blocks. John at Modular Performance will build you a boss short block.

As far as TrickFlows go, I would honestly stick with PI heads if you do not plan on turning 7000+RPM. Nick's stage 3 ported PI heads have been proven to produce the same power as Trickflows up until around 7000rpm, plus they are cheaper.

I would talk to John first about the short block, and make a decision on it. Then I would e-mail Nick at Modular Head Shop and tell him what short block you are going with and how much boost you are wanting to push, and ask him what heads/cam/intake you should go with. I have personally seen a few of the Modular Performance short block/Modular Head Shop Heads/Cam/Intake combo's....and to say I was impressed would be an understatement.

BTW: The reason I recommend Modular Performance over MMR is just because of all the little things they do. If you want the piston notched for bigger cams, that is free with Modular Performance. If you want the same from MMR, you have to pay. Modular Performance also throws in a set of Cometic head gaskets. There are a few other little things that Modular Performance does that MMR doesnt. I have not personally dealt with MMR, but know people who have, and some were happy and others were not. If you want more info about that, shoot me a PM.

Agreed, the Ford Racing Boss Block is the way to go if it fits into your budget. The main reason is the bore size, 3.700", compared to the 3.552" bore of all the rest of the 4.6L blocks.

Having the larger bore will help in airflow characteristics around the valves, it unshroudes the valves. This helps alot with getting more airflow into the combustion chamber, and also allows the air that enters to be more laminar which increases airflow.

Simply put it is a great thing to do.
With that said, the iron 03/04 Cobra block has enough material to do a 3.700" bore should you choose to do that.

The iron Cobra blocks are the same as iron 2V blocks and will not go 3.7 bore, 80 over is pushing it hard on that one (and I know that as I am doing just that myself)

MMR is pushing stroker cranks as they are now cheaper to get brand new than stock stroke especially the Coyote based cranks.

IMHO - a good iron block 20 over with forged pistons and rods and a stock cast crank will be all you need on the bottom end for up to the 600RWHP range.

While the iron 2V and 03/04 blocks are similar, they are not the same. I have seen this mis-information out there many times, but they are in fact different.

The 03/04 Cobra blocks do have enough material to bore to 3.700". We use Total Performance here in San Diego for any high end machining or porting work. Being a Mustang Specialist Machining Shop, they have alot of experience doing modular engines. They have a guy that only works on block machining, that's his job, and he tells me the 2V and 03/04 blocks are different. Total Performance has done a few of the 3.700" bore Cobra blocks, and all are running well.

The only difference between the iron Cobra and the regular iron 2V Romeo is the clearancing for the center counterweights. Sure you can bore it 3.7 but get your sonic tester out and let me know what you find. They did not cast the bore walls thicker on any street iron block, they are all pretty much the same for bore thickness over the 20 year production run its had so far.

Alright guys. Your insight was crucial in deciding the route for the build.
Short block is ordered and but still need to make a decision on compression and diamond vs manley pistons. Insight please. I went with MMR for the build but going with last call probably for other things like cams and heads. Let me know what you guys think. Pistons and compression....

You have to e-mail John to get ahold of him. Like I said earlier, it's a 1 man show over there, so e-mail is the best way to get ahold of him.

Go with Diamond piston's with around 9:5 compression

Also, for your heads and cams, I would recommend going with Nick at Modular Head shop. That is his bread and butter. That's who will be doing my heads/cam/intake on my build.
