i am lookin at a late 80s or early 90s 2.3 fuel injected mustang.is there any definite way to tell what year it is without running v i n numbers.i have plans to put a 428 cobra jet in it .also did they come with the 8.8 rear end or another one.

Look at VIN number.

First letter is the decade

D is 1970's

E is 1980's

and F is 1990's.

EDIT: My 1991 convertible starts with 1FA and its a 1991.

Second digit should be a number and should be the year of that decade.

None of the 2.3L Mustangs came with the 8.8" rear.

Ok Im at a loss and Im not at home to look this up.

Did some checking at work.

The VIN is as such

1FA= World Manufacturer code, Ford North America

B= Active restraint system (C=airbags)

P=Passenger car

27 or 28= 2dr/convert or hatchback

Letter= engine code

0-X= Ford control digit. X is for non production or experimental cars.

Letter= Model year identifier (G=86, H=87, J=88, K-89, etc to P=83. No O )

Letter= identifies assembly plant

Digits= Unit number of Mustang

Well if it's an areo nose car then it's 87-93

non-airbag car = 87-89
airbag car = 90-93
25 years dash emblem = 89 or 90 model year
dash emblem without 25 years = 90-93 model year
large SN95 style dome light = 92-93

Start with that, tell is what you find and then we can give you more clues.

A few other ways to check: The door tag will show month/year of manufacture. Check the ignition coil cover for the emissions decal. That will show the model year. Check the glovebox for the original owners manual and see what year it's for.

Some stuff I have found with the 2.3L that may help identify the year:
87-89 got an HR980 small steel body A/C compressor. 90-93 got a 10P15C aluminum body compressor with top mount inlets and outlets.
91 (90 california)-93 cars are mass-air and have coil packs, 8 spark plugs, no distributor, and a large mass-air sensor in the intake tube.
