Drum Stuck - Is there a drum puller?

Is there such thing as a drum puller? My rear drum on the pass. side is stuck, the brakes are locked open and I can't get the drum off. My bro suggested I open the bleeder and see if it'll release the pressure...would that work? I don't wanna have to re-bleed all of them if it won't work. I've tried the hammer, pry bar, moved the adjuster both ways, all of that stuff and just got mad both times and put the stupid wheels back on. The car also pulls to the left, which, I just read last week, is caused by stuck brakes, so it goes hand in hand. Help!

I'd bleed them and just keep wacking away with a BFH (Big F***in Hammer).

yep e-brake was off. Thanks...any other ideas? I'm tired of pulling the wheel off and not getting the drum off. I really don't want to pay a shop to do this - partially because of the $$ and partially because of pride.

i keep beating the drum with a hammer. sometimes the drum just gets stuck on it,and just needs a good beating. there is a tool they sell to losen up the brake shoes, if the shoes are stuck open tight against the drum.

we have a big ass puller that we use on drums..I dont know if that is what its made for but thats what I use it for..

Try the adjuster again. It takes a crap load of turns to get it to move much. I'll bet its that.

thanks guys. I'll have to see if auto zone has a puller or something. I've adjusted both ways like I said and my bro did as well. I've beat on it, tapped it, pried at it, it's stuck lol.

Yeah I know you have adjusted it. My question is how far?

Until it forces the pads against the drum and stops the axle from spinning, and then going in the other direction until it stops spinning? That is the way to be sure its not just the pads butting up against the ridge that builds on the drum from long usage.

I'm sure you know this, but I'm trying to save you the humiliation at the garage or dealer, and the money that will add injury to insult.

I had one stuck on a different vehicle, smacking on one side then the other with a hammer got it loose. Just so we're clear, i hit the face of the drum, not from the rear.

I find it difficult to see in that little hole and tell if the adjuster is actually open or closed, but my bro could see in there and he said he adjusted it until it was closed. Definately don't want the humiliation of something stupid like that though.

See if you can spray some type of lubricant inside the drum and hit it sharply, not necessarily hard, all the way around. It might take a while so lube it, whack it, and then watch some NASCAR or something and then start the process all over again. It will eventually come off.

Or....You can use any type of gear puller if you can find one big enough...2 or three prong.

Spray some PB Blaster or similar rust buster right around where the drum mounts to the hub and then try hammering alternating sides all around the edge of the drum. Sounds like banging a gong and the neighbors come outside to have a look, but it will eventually break free.

Heat the drum with a torch, and smack it with a rubber mallet.

You said you backed the star wheel off already? All you gotta do is loosen the star wheel and it will come right off. You just gotta find out which way to spin it.

Don't open up the bleeder. It won't help out any. The shoes are physically jammed.

Just for giggles can you turn the drum by hand ?? If you can chances are the shoes aren't jammed tight...Try backwards, I think the shoes cam up tighter when you apply the brakes going forward...Probably the ridge on the inside of the drum where the shoes rub is holding it or it's tight as *ell on the center of the axle...PB blaster on the center and beat 180 degrees apart...Top/bottom, front/back...You want to try and get it to "rock" on the center...

Spray the *ell out of the inside with brake cleaner to cut the junk built up and maybe holding the shoes from spreading apart...Anywhere you can stick the straw and it looks like it's going inside...

Careful if your using a metal hammer...

Once saw a guy try and remove a drum that was giving him fits...It still had those locking washers they put on the wheel studs...Funny as *ell if it's not you doing it...

you just need a bigger hammer...dont be afraid to hit it hard and like someone else said spray some pb blaster on the hub in the middle of the drum and beat away

This problem happens to me fairly often, I just use lots of patience and a hammer!

I have a huge gear puller that I use to remove seized drums. I'm sure you can rent one somewhere. Once you do that, the drum is definitely comming off; although it might be in several pieces if it is stuck real bad.

I wouldn't say hit the middle.. Had same problem before..

Spraying it with some PB blaster will help for sure !


I AlWAYS hit it from the REAR [inner side of the drum]

On the little Lip of the drum..


Do this .. Hit from inner side ..

Hit [1]Top Right --- then go to [2]Bottom LEFT [3]Top left - then
[4]Bottom Right

Just do it in a X Cross Pattern .. Work all 4 Corners with that HAMMER !


Should work Wonders !
