1)The shop that is installing my 4:10's this Saturday has offered me three dyno pulls and a wideband custom tune for $140. I already have a 91 Race Tune from Bamachips, am I really going to gain much from the dyno tune compared to what I already have?

2) They're doing the tune the following morning after the gear install. Is a break-in period for gears considered mandatory or will it be okay to run it? I also have a 120 mile drive home, any issues there?

depends on the tuner really. my friend got his car dynotuned where as i got the mail order tune from bama chips.

his car has alot more done to his, but i consistently trap 2-6 mph faster then him. fastest hes trapped it 104, mostly around 100. i trap 105 consistently and hit 106 a few times.

i've also run faster times then him, with both our cars not hooking well. his best being around 13.5 so my car is around 3 tenths faster.

i drove his car and mine seemed to pull so much better. his just felt lazy strummin thru the gears. the bama chips tune really woke mine up.

when i installed my gears, i think i drove 500 miles before i really beat on my car, some mechanics tell you to basically drive it normal the way home, and no problems, you shouldn't run into any.

with a dyno pull, i wouldn't be too concerned with harming the gears, your not launching the car at 5k or anything, your just going to do basically a high speed pull.

just don't have too much fun on the way home from the dyno pull and you should be good.

My tuner did basically that. The A/F was pretty good so he just kept adding timing. After 3 pulls the handheld was maxed out on timing, so we stopped...

To that end, and this is vs. a Bama 93 race, I went from 303 to 306 RWHP, with gains throughout the RPM range (as high as about 5 lbs of torque). E-mail tunes can normally be very close on the A/F but tend to be a little conservative on the timing to prevent detonation.

I definitely agree that it really depends on the tuner, however, I wouldn't suggest that "having a lot more done to a car" automatically implies that it should be faster... we all know that one could very well do many things wrong.

mine works really well and can take a fair amount

Doug's mail order tunes are pretty good. Dyno tunes are better being that thy can adjust everything specifically for your car, but the tuner must be knowledgeable with the S197 or you will be wasting your money.

I would agree with that. Mail order tunes will get you into the ball park, but a good dyno tune will definitely be an improvement. I had a Brentspeed 93 octane which was nice, but on my car the A/F mixture was way too lean. Even after getting a modified tune it was still high. My dyno tune fixed that and put 14 more torque.

Do you think it would be important to have the dyno tune done on a very average weather day ? or would it matter ?
