If I were to do it over again and I wanted more out of mine. I would have done a Dart based 427 with some heavily hogged out TFS heads and a custom cam. You will have tons a of torque, and you can hit your hp goal at the same time.

And this could be done naturally aspirated? 600whp?

And this can be done without a power adder?

Well since you are familiar with it...why not a 03-04 cobra motor swap....then when you're finished you'll have a sweet termi motor with a 6 speed....

Yeah thought of rushing I'm not sure hoe much would be spent on trying to fit the motor and new trans

Surely...The last 408 i had built had no fancy machining or porting/polishing and was based on a 351w block using 351c heads a boss intake and a custom ground comp cam and made over 500...with better heads, carb, exhaust, and mayb alil fancy work im sure its doable!

Big block?? I think that's completely unnecessary. Easiest and most reliable way is a 351 based engine with some boost.

Oh I'm sure, that's less then 1.5HP per ci. Call up Woody @ Fordstrokers.com and he can hook you up.

NA is going to be very difficult, going to take all custom parts, an expensive rotating assembly and more than likely some high rpm.
The last guy that wanted to make that much power na here was that guy that wanted to use the nascar setup, no surprise we've never seen him again.

Here's a setup that my buddy builds for guys that want 600rwhp+. Some of the parts change for each application, such as SC brand or turbo but the basics are the same.
Doesn't get much easier than this. And it needs no dyno tuning or chip.

600RWHP can happen with a big inch combo but it will be pretty aggressive, depends how streetable you want. If you want a NA car, big cube stroker gets my vote, Id stay away from the big block because it is a ton of weight in a fox up front. If you want boost a aftermarket block 331-363ci, a 200cc head, large intake and a turbo get my vote...can be very streetable and more power is on tape with a turn of the boost controller.

With that power your going to need a fuel system, suspension and chassis upgrades as well...

1) Decide if you want a NA or a boosted combo?
2) Decide on a budget

I did a 331 with a 76mm Turbo, AFR205s, TFS Box-R, and a hydralic roller custom cam. It made 762 rwhp through an old-style TKO. It's almost as streetable as stock and pulled 22 mpg on my last 4 hour trip from AL to FL.

Now, that's certainly do-able, but I have to question if you really want to spend the kind of money and time it's going to take to do something like this. Since you said you just want a weekend warrior, why shoot for 600rwhp? In my mind, you don't buy a dart block to put down just barely more than is safe with a stock 302 block. You can save money and complexity by running around 500rwhp through the stock 302 block on a safe tune. It's easy: premium off-the-shelf H/C/I with a 67-70mm turbo. Do it this way and you will save $10k+ Go to 600rwhp and beyond, and you will have to start over with every part of the car: engine (aftermarket block), suspension, fuel system, drivetrain, etc...) If you're going to do all that and make a weekend warrior out of it, why would you restrict yourself to 600?

Dude, 500rwhp in a stripped out and setup turbo fox-body would crush a 600 rwhp '03-'04 Cobra street-car.

Good luck,

Chris

That's all good but my stock block has 150k miles on it. I'll be building already. New motor, trans and rear are already going to happen. I am not rich but I will be a long term project getting one piece at a time. Would 500whp set up still new substantially less than 100 more? BTW thanks for the reply . I appreciate the suggestions. What would you do?

The reason shooting for less than 500rwhp costs so much less is that it doesn't require a race or 351 block to do it. So you save on the block, the internals, machine work.
Then you could use a vortech sc trim, which is only like 2 grand, instead of 5k on a race SC or turbos.
Stock 302's with h/c/i and an S trim can get you there, no fuel system needed either.

If you engine is worn, 302's are a dime a dozen in explorers.

I'm a little more conservative on the stock block's longevity at 500rwhp, so IMO, shoot for around 450rwhp. Which is still alot in a car this light.

Chris is probably right about 10k less money.

The guys are right less then 10 grand it can be built... the weak link in a stock 302 is the rod bolts, as long as the bores are still round you can hone it, re-ring it, add arp bolts and have a nice fresh motor. Sometimes it is cheaper to replace the factory rod with an aftermarket piece rather then upgrade stock rod bolts, by the time you hone and press them on an off a SCAT rod is cheaper. Any decent H/C/I and a supercharger and while you may not meet your power expectations it will be a very strong runner.

I ran my 169,000 stock shortblock 302 with a 175 shot for years, sprayed from one end of the track to the other car made 540RWHP/742RWTQ, all I had replaced was rings and bearings, and notched the pistons for my cam.

HP is just for bragging rights.... Once you get into the 600FWHP area aftermarket fuel rails ($600) are near a must, and then you'll need to look at a fuel system (another $1500), trans ($3000+), major chassis updates etc...if you want it to last. It adds up very quick.....

Chris, give me a shout or shoot me an email if your all settled, lets figure things out

The difference between 500 rear wheel HP and 600 rear wheel HP is a huge money difference. The stock block is good for around 550. So what people are saying is you're going to dump more money on the 600HP combo, probably almost twice as much as a 500HP set up. Basically you could reuse your stock block (get it machined and cleaned up, etc.), put heads / cam / intake with power adder (turbo or blower) and make your 500HP. If you must have over 600HP you really can't use a stock block. You'll have to spend the money for a sportsman, dart, etc. like people have mentioned.

Listen to the suggestions above they are dead on.

Thanks guys. Makes sense. I just think if I'm going to do it. It will be the ONLY time I do. I don't want to spent if I'll only want more later. I'd rather upgrade everything. Not that money isn't an issue but I own a roofing/ siding company and do alright. It will be buying a bit at a time. I'll get a trans. Then maybe a rear then start on the motor ect... It's a long term project for me as this will be the car I keep forever. It's a 90 Notchback.
