easy rear speaker ?

91 hatch, bought the car w/o stereo. the door has stock speakers which I'm changing, removed the rear grilles to find no speakers just wires . my ? is I know the size and measured the depth so I don't hit the brace that is behind the panel but how does the speakers mount ??? never mounted one before so I have no idea. like I said just wires, the cars body brace, insulation thats it no bracket or anything to bolt the speaker to.

also pics of how one is mounted would be a big help. thanks.

The rear speakers mount to the speaker grille. If you turn it over, you will see 4 holes where the screws go. All you gotta do is put your speaker on, put the speaker grille in place, screw it in, and your ready to go.

Also, when you replace the door speakers make sure you measure the depth from the door to the window track. If you buy a speaker thats to "tall", the magnet can attach to the window track and it can cause your stereo to go into "protect" mode, which is hard to fix because you have to unhook your harness, and a bunch of other mess.

If you buy a speaker and it does get to close to the window track, you can always get some longer screws and a few washers to pull it away from the track.

thanks alot for the help my fellow white gter. wouldn't have never thought it mounted to the grille itself, this site is great, learn new stuff all the time . thanks for the door speaker tip, happy 4th .

Oh yeah, if you ever decide to get dash speakers you will have to find some that clear the air conditioning vent.

Check out Crutchfield.com. You can punch in your car and year etc. and they will give you a list of everything that fits. Just pick speakers in your price range and you are done. Crutchfield includes wiring harnesses and master sheets, detailing teardown and installation procedures as well. I have been using them for over 12 years, for everthing car audio and electronics as a whole and have been 110% satisfied. Their prices are almost always better or the same, you just get more. Not to mention they have a technical assistance line that is fantastic. And no, I don't work for them!

thats where I'm getting my stuff from, I got my system for my contour from them. they are great to deal with. I like using the harnesses they supply so I can keep my factory system to keep my svt value years down the line.

I'm not using the dash speakers for now unless I run a crossover to feed them, since I'm bypassing the factory amp.

I have been an intaller for years and never found an adapter that works right for the fox stangs (scosche, metra etc.) because of the factory amp. Also any 6" speakers out will drop into the doors fine, if you want to go to 6.5 or 6.75 I would suggest cutting out the factory speaker grill and mounting it through the door panel, if you use washers to space it out you will loose your mid bass. I have MB Quat Premiums in mine mounted through the door panel and it sound killer. In the rear any 5x7 or 6x8 will fit the mounting points. 3.5's in the dash will tend to mess up your imaging. Also the factory 3.5's have a high pass cap on their side so you dont have to worry about blowing them (unless you give them more than 25 watts).Good luck and keep us posted!

Very good advice from everyone. I have 6 1/2" in the door, but they are a special application speaker from Pioneer. Good luck with your system.

Yeah, ditch the factory football amplifier. Get rid of it altogether, it will free up some much necessary space behind the radio. I deleted the football and just used the factory wiring from the amps harness to wire up my speakers, worked very slick, just use a 9v batter or some other power source to figure out which wires go to which speakers (listen for static). I tried using diagrams, but there is a lot of inconsistency out there, IMO.

My Stang has all the O.E speaker in it now. (take note of mileage on car) It had the factory stereo when I got it though (which I still have), had an aftermarket deck installed with an amp and 10" sub. Still useing the O.E speakers. It sounds great IMO. Here's my delima. The back driver speaker has blown now. I would like to keep the O.E speakers in it but Ford does not make them anymore. Wanted to keep it O.E. so it plugs right back up. Now I gotta find me some replacements. Anyone have the factory 5x7 in good shape they wanna ace.
It is a 5x7 right??

Alpine 5x7s work for the back..any 6.5" for the door.
