edelbrock perf. 1406 help

freshly rebuilt edelbrock performer 600 cfm 1406 carb w/ electric choke. 289 w/ aluminum intake, mallory unilite electronic ignition.

i received the carb from a friend. low miles, but sticky float etc., so i rebuilt. popped it on, and my car starts, however, with the IMS all the way in and the idle throttle screw all the way out, my car, when started, revs waaaaaaaay high, to the point where i shut it off after 2 seconds because it's like it's at WOT.

did i mess up rebuilding it? i've tried all the way out/in on the IMS screws, but it's not doing anything for me. what could cause this?

hooked up and it's closed since the engine is cold.


when i say it revs high, i'm talking about like if you stuff the throttle in neutral, except it happens right when you turn the key.

okay i figured out the high rpm problem . . but now i can't get it to idle at all. same thing with adjusting the idle screws, i closed them all the way, then tried getting it to idle, adjusting at 1/2 turn increments. no luck at all

there is only one idle screw, and it should be on the throttle linkage. The 2 mixture screws are on the front at the base of the carb. For initial startup, the mixture screws should be out 1 1/2 turns. If it won't idle after asjusting the idle screw properly, I would suspect the float level since you just had the carb apart. What was the problem with the WOT problem you had?

I'm guessing it was the "fast idle cam" portion of the choke linkage. I never liked those things, just seems like a bad idea to have the engine instantly rev to 2000 rpm (or whatever) on a cold start.

i agree about the fast idle cam and choke. Were I to buy a carb these days, an electric choke would be out of the question. Too many behavioral problems, the fast idle cam seems to engage at wierd times when the temp is low, making cold driving highly irritating.

I've had problems with poor/no idle on Edelbrock carbs when the air horn gasket is toast. These gaskets are really easy to wreck.

So,
Bottom out the air/fuel idle screws, then turn out 1 1/2 times
Engage the idle screw, on drivers side of carb, just enough to move the cam plus 1/4 turn

You should be able to wing it from there. Otherwise change the air horn gasket, ... just for giggles.
