Is it difficult to go from EFI to carb? I have Fuel Injected motor in my car now, and am planning on getting a DSS 331 shortblock, but want to go carbed.

Thanks

you know--I just read an article at the afr website with a 331 and they tested fi vs carb. with a speed demon carb they pulled like 30 hp more peak and maintained more hp and tq throughout the rpm range. I do believe it would be easy--bolt on a carb intake and carb- different distributor and maybe throttle cable. If you look at the average fuel mileage of say a 1990 fi mustang and maybe a 1984 stang with a carb I believe they both were advertised to get the same mileage as well. the value of the car would be hurt i would think though. just my two cents.

Can you provide a link to this page?
I would like to see how evenly they matched the efi motor to the carb motor.

Assuming the 84 mustang and the 90 Mustang had the same fuel economy numbers (I cannot verify that now), I am pretty sure the 90 was rated at more power.

There were other changes that were made between these years however, so comparing 84 mustangs to 90 mustangs is a little silly.

If you are already efi, then I would stay efi.
The carb conversion will cost you more money than just bolting your efi stuff back on.

Carbs are cool. So cool, in fact, that I use two of 'em.

I will not be bolting the stock efi stuff onto a 331 motor, if i stay FI then i will buy new EFI stuff, upper, lower injectors, the works. I had a carbed 85 and if i had a fuel problem it was pretty simple to find, as to where with the FI motor, it can be any one injector that stops working, either fuel rail or anything else.

i can't say it's a good idea at all, and you'll never pass emisions and your mpg will drop like a rock, but if it's what you want try this

Faulty injectors can be found by using a cylinder balance test. Cost of special tooling involved? A single 2 cent paper clip. The knowledge gained in understanding EFI & computer controlled engines, priceless...

It is already illegal to convert a EFI car to carb according to the Federal Goverment - it is in effect the same thing as removing the smog control equipment. The only exception to this rule is off road vehicles, like pure race cars. Lucky for most of us, the Feds are too busy with other things to look under the hood of every car on the highway

There was a post a short while ago (don't remember if it was here or another site), where a guy had converted late 80's RX-7 to a 5.0. He had all the emissions equipment from the 5.0, but did not have the factory intake tubing. He failed emissions testing.
I realize that many people do not have emissions testing, so this won't affect them.
However, keep in mind that emissions testing will not go away any time soon, and will only become more widespread as time goes on.

Just my thoughts.

Excellent read.
Holdener has a sweet job!

There are still questions in my mind as to the driveability of each setup, but that intake and carb seem like a very good combo.

I'd like to see the same test with a short runner efi upper intake.
That would be interesting.

Thanks for posting the link,
jason
