I've read through a good many of the EGR posts but had a few specific questions. My car has no smog pump and since I'm putting a new longblock into the car, I was considering removing as much clutter as possible. Without a pump, is my EGR system working anyway? Previously i had capped off the piping that runs from the back of the heads forward. Any help would be appreciated.

The egr routes through the stock lower/upper intake manifold the pipe in the back of the block is for the smog pump.
The air pump is completely separate from the EGR. EGR just adds exhaust gas to the intake mixture. The smog pump adds fresh air to the exhaust, helping the cats do their job.
I don't recommend removing the egr. There is no performance gain, and there is the possibility of drivability issues at part throttle. If you do remove the egr it would be best to disable the function in the computer, but this requires modifying the program in the computer itself.
