i am wiring a 91 cougar HO motor (looks identical to the 94-95 mustang intake)into my ranger 4x4 and am wondering about the EGR. some guys use them when doing swaps, others dont. what are the pro's and con's of both ways? other than notching my heater box yet again for clearing something else, and plumbing the egr tube to my passenger manifold, its not an issue.... but i am wondering how the motor will run without it. i was wanting to keep all emission stuff but the smog pump and its associated crap. if i go without it, what do i do with the wiring that went to it? thanks!

The EGR valve is used to cool the combustion gases. When the combustion gases get to hot NOX emissions get to high. By recirculating the exhaust gases it cools the combustion gases and lowers NOX emissions. A side benefit of the lower combustion temp is a slight decrease in detonation issues. If the EGR is removed, there is usually no difference in driveability, but there is a change in emissions out the tailipipe. And since the EGR is not used at WOT there is no affect on performance either.

thanks 347. any other inputs from others who may have deleted the egr?

the reason for me injecting the truck is fuel mileage primarily. its an 86 injected engine anyway, i just put a 4 barrel on it when i built it years ago because the 86 EFI intake wouldnt clear the heater box, but the 91 t-bird intake i have now will, so im giving it a shot. i took the wiring, all sensors, intake assembly, passenger header, and cam from the cougar and put it all on my 86 motor. even without the egr, i am still more likely to have a cleaner runnin engine that with the 4 barrel, right? and if i go without the egr, how do you delete/bypass the wiring that went to it? leave it unplugged, jump it, bypass it.....?

You can just leave the wires unplugged and taped up out of the way. Depending on the year of the ranger (is it factory EFI?) you will get the check engine light on because of the loss of all of the emissions stuff, but it really will not hinder the operation of the engine. I deleted the EGR and smog pump, air injection system et all and cut the wires out of the harness, and removed all of the vacuum hoses and related switches, both in the engine compartment and inside the inner fender, and one last delete was the check engine light bulb! Engine runs fine, engine compartment looks clean, only people mad at me are the smog Nazi's. But since it is not a daily driver I can live with myself.

its an 87 ranger and was a factory 2.3 efi 2wd auto. i built it as a 5.0 t-18 4 speed 4wd. it was factory efi, but i removed all the factory underhood harness when i learned the 5.0 86 efi intake wouldnt fit and ran a duraspark setup and a 4bbl.

i rarely drive the truck anyway and its become more of a hauling/towing beast than the daily driver it used to be, since gas went over $3 a gallon a few years ago. if theres enough room for me to cut another notch out of the heater box to clear the end of the egr, i will keep the system intact, if not, i wont. i just want to know if the engine will run like **** without it or not.

Pulling it is also going to make it harder on fuel. So keep that in mind.
