Electric fan decision

I know about people using contour and other stock electric fans and retrofitting them to their fox boy. I will be moving to an electric fan soon and saw this kit on ebay.

This is everything that is needed to add an electric fan to a fox right? Wouldn't it be better to go with a new kit, since it will cost about the same if not a little less? Its going on an 89gt.

Don't even think about an electric fan without upgrading to a 3G or other high current output alternator.

Here's why:

Electric fan = 3G alternator if you want long life & reliability from your car.
The electric fan saves some HP. The stock fan's parasitic drag runs from 7-12 HP depending on who you talk to. The electric fan uses about 1/2 HP of power from the electrical system.

Figure this:
Ignition system & computer = 12 amps
Fuel pump = 12 amps
Exterior lights = 15 amps
Fan (heater or A/C) = 15 amps (can run between 5-25 amps depending on setting)
Radio & instruments = 10 amps
Wipers = 10 amps

That's grand total of 74 amps from a 65 amp alternator. Talk about overdrawn at the bank!

The electric fan will pull 20-30 amps unless you have a DCControl fan controller, and startup surges of 90-100 amps or more.

Indeed I plan on the 3g alternator before I do the fan which leads me to a quesiton about that. Can I just get a 3g alternator from a parts store or do I need some part off of a car in a junkyard? What cars besides mustangs from 94 to 95 had 3g alternators? Why do I need a fan with a shroud?

My preference with alternators are factory original.
I'd rather have a used one from the junkyard than a new one from autozone.

You need a shroud because that fan will only pull air where the blades are, which is probably less than 50% of the surface.
The shroud causes a vacuum effect, pulling air over the entire surface of the radiator.

Use the lincoln fan with the DCC controller setup.

I got my 3G from a 3.0 Taurus. It was a new one that had just been installed,I lucked out. The electric fan is also from a Taurus, and does an excellent job. I've said before, even when it hit 117 degrees this summer, the car stayed cool even at idle for 20 minutes at a parade. They are cheap, and readily available at any boneyard.

I went a bit cheaper and used a Hayden 3710 in FRONT of the radiator, as a pusher. There is no fan in the engine bay. It's wired to a switch, relay, and a power distribution block I have up front since my battery is out back. Cools just fine with my 2 core aluminum radiator. When the car was a daily, I used a smaller secondary fan behind the radiator(puller), also with a switch/relay. Worked great. The reason I used these is because of the warranty they have, lifetime, and that they're easy to get locally.
