Exhaust is Too Loud!

I finally completed my exhaust system. For a couple months, I have been running my stock catbacks with Hooker LT headers and o/r x-pipe. The headers and x-pipe slightly increased the sound. Today, I installed Magnaflow catbacks and my car is increadibly loud. I know that I will get grief for this question, but how can I quiet it down?

Although the tests were done on a stock Mach I, they should have implications for the GT. It is interesting that even though the Magnaflows were the quietest and least expensive, they offered the most horsepower gains.

Get rid of the o/r X-pipe and get one with cat's, or get an o/r H.

You think thats loud?? Magnaflows are some of the quietest aftermarket catbacks there are. Try running a Bassani Street Comp, Flowmaster, MAC, Loudmouth, FR500, etc catbcack on there. Most are much louder than the Magnaflow.

if hes got the hooker lt's then he cant get an h-pipe, hes gotta get the hooker x, im not sure whether or not u can get it with cats, theres a thread thats on here recently about bassani baffles that go in the tailpipes that are supposed to quiet the exhaust down, not sure if bassani sells them seperately, but they are included in one of thier catbacks. other than that...get a borla, dynomax or some other quieter catback is all i know to tell u, good luck

I am getting too old, but even when I was younger I liked fast cars that were more subtle in their sound. Thanks for the tip about the cats and/or h-pipe. Unfortunately, Hooker only sells the o/r x-pipe to match up with their headers. I do remember reading a thread where someone had a muffler shop weld in a modified MAC Prochamber. I've also read that someone actually welded some hi-flow cats into their o/r x-pipe. I believe that they did it to regain some lost low-end torque because their exhaust did not have enough back pressure.

Car?? Loud??? TOO??? I dotn think ive ever heard those words use on here without NOT or ENOUGH in there somewhere. well, anyway, the obvious choice would be to get an H-pipe or an catted X. If whats written above is true and you cand get either for your headers, the only thing i would suggest is have a muffler shop weld in some cats to your current exhaust. Personaly, faced with the same situation i would just put the stock mufflers back on. they (and by "they" i mean i dont know what company it is) make a Y pipe with a baffle that goes on your exhaust right before the muffler. on the street you close one end of the Y and the exhaust is routed throught the stock mufflers. When you take it to the track or just want so power, take the plate off and the exhaust is releassed brfore it gets to the muffler for a straight-through effect. Quiet, but still there should you need it.

This sounds like the best solution. But, I just checked it out and magnaflow makes 40 different cats. Any suggestions?

I thought about headers, and changing the factory H pipe, but I think I'm going to leave it all stock. For what you gain in horsepower, its not worth the hassle. Headers from my experience can cause heat problems etc. I have the MagnaFlow MagnaPack exhaust, and its pretty loud, but I love the way it sounds. It stays pretty nice and "comfortably" quiet when your shifting below 2k, put it to the floor and it screams.

Do you have the MagnaFlow exhaust with the Magnaflow mufflers or do you have the Magnaflow glass packed mufflers? If you have the glass packed mufflers (they're basically just a straight tube that you can see all the way through), then just throw on a set of the Magnaflow mufflers.

cats probably won't make a whole lot of difference. you're probably gonna have to get new mufflers welded in.

I gained 23 rwhp from the Hooker LT headers and o/r x-pipe. These two exhaust mods have by far been the best performance mods to date.

I have the Magnaflow catbacks. According to postings on this forum and the product review that I listed above, the Magnaflows are suppose to be the quietest of the performance catbacks. As far as I know, there is no quieter catback. Unfortunately, my headers and o\r x-pipe offer little resistance to the exhaust flow.

You can use some sound deadning material like dynamat or b-quiet's brown bread in the interior. I've also read that the basani baffles also help out.

You've got to be kidding. I have full length BBK headers, shorty x-pipe with no cats and Flowmaster Thunder series cat-back. My friends hear me coming from 3-4 blocks away if i'm not even getting on it. If it's too loud for ya put some desiel mufflers and you'll have a sleeper.. as far as exhaust goes.

If you can't hear it before you see it... It's not even worth it

I'd start with the Bassani baffles. You can buy them directly from Bassani (just call them). They are cheap and easy to install. They do make a difference, but who knows how much with your setup ...
