Sup guys. Im sure this question has been thrown around a bit. Ive tried searching the forums and came up with nothing. So if you got a link to a previous thread of this topic let me know. But basically i just want to know which make or which style of mufflers gives me the most hp gain. which most torque gain? Im thinking of doing one chamber like an slp loudmouth good/bad?

thanks.

On the exhaust side, most horsepower is gained from LT headers (15-20 rhwp)and a performance mid-pipe (8-10 rwhp). The cat-back exhaust system is primarily for sound, although some gains can be expected. At www.mach1review.com, they compared the performance gains of three cat-back systems on a Mach I: Bassani, Magnaflow, and SLP. The SLP gained 8.5 rwhp and 14.9 rwt. The Magnaflow gained 12.5 rwhp and 8.2 rwt. The Bassani gained 4.3 rwhp and 8.6 rwt.

Magnaflow seems to be the performance exhaust as far as Mufflers go. When mated with an off road X pipe, I felt a difference.

You're going to need Long Tubed Headers, NOT shortys.

You're going to need an off-road pipe. X makes more power than H, they say.

You're going to need a catback. I suggest Magnaflow.

Non catted midpipe make more power than catted. I gained only .1-.2 on my quarter mile time with 40flows that I welded in. Could just be I learned to drive a bit better though.

Unless you had something seriously restricting flow, the mufflers did not yield you 2 tenths in the 1/4, ESPECIALLY not with flows.I'm gonna say you were driving better.

I'v eseen several articles on this topic. General findings were Headers: long tube's make most hp, Mid-Pipe: the Prochamber makes the most hp. Cat-Back: Not a very big difference in hp, pretty much all make good power.

To recap...long tubes, prochamber, what ever cat-back you want. :nice:

dynomax ultraflos are great mufflers, although they are overlooked a lot on here because they are "too quiet" personally i kinda like the stealth thing, i actually read on turbomustangs.com that they got 25rwhp by switching from a flowmaster to a dynomax ultraflo catback, this was on a forced induction car so your gains would only be a fraction of that, but im pretty sure the dynomax are some of the highest flowing muffs out there, just wanted to throw dynomax in there cuz they tend to get ignored on here a lot

Buy an exhaust system based on sound preference or build quality (stainless vs standard steel). Pretty much any 2 1/2 inch system is going to be comparable at basic bolt on levels and doesn't really start to make a lot of difference until horsepower levels start to climb above 400 or so.

But a pretty standard system for most bolt on cars should be LT headers backed by some sort of high flow catted or O/R 2 ½ inch mid-pipe and cat-back. People buying shorty headers are usually only doing so because of cost or fitment issues involved with installing long tubes. Don’t be left with the impression that louder is better. Most loud strait through or single chamber mufflers are that way because backpressure is nearly eliminated. Reducing backpressure is a good thing, but it’s a good idea to allow for some backpressure within the system to keep lower and mid range torque levels high. Not to mention that although the loud exhaust may sound great at a stoplight, or revving it out for your buddies. It quickly becomes tiresome on those days that you actually want to hear anything going on around you…..like say the radio or the voices in your head. :D
