yes the lower is more restictive. he gets right around $200 or so but well worth it. the chinese replicas still need to be cleaned up, they have casting left in them and alot of guys complain about the distributor relief not having enough clearance. an explorer intake is a good swap also.

the stock shorties are not really restictive in a sence. they picked up 7-10hp over the stock cast iron headers from the non H.O. 5ltrs. they do have some restrictive contours persay but you got rid of the biggest restictor already, the stock exhaust and the aod cars had a more restictive exhaust than the 5spd cars. swaping shorties is a common mod because it's easy vs long tubes, but the long tubes net a bigger gain. going to the 1 5/8 tubes gains a little in the mid range but drops low end torque due to loss in flow velocity vs increase in flow volume, just like going over 2.5 inch exhaust kills your torque. you need a certian amount of back pressure and velocity, which is a whole nother thing.

get headers that are ceramic coated inside and out, like ford racing(which uses jet hot) or jba(big $$) the coating on the inside is the big thing. the coating isn't just for rust proofing but also offers hp gains, by keeping the heat inside the headers it accelerates the pulsed-vacuum effect on headers, resulting in more effective scavenging of cylinders. The increased velocity of exhaust gases produced by higher exit inertia not only clears each cylinder more quickly; it also draws in the next fuel/air charge more efficiently, vs standard headers read about this on jet hot's web site.

have fun on your project .

Thanks. What do you think about the mac unequal shorty headers for the 5.0. I think they come ceramic coated. There are a lot of good reviews about them in stangnet. The only bad review was on a 4.6 cobra. All of the 5.0's had positive results. Exhaust sounds better and increases acceleration, according the owners of those mustangs, even the one that didn't mention anything about having aftermarket intake manifold or heads, just underdrive pulleys and cold air intake. Check it out under reviews in this website.

In the forums they get very mixed reviews. The individual flanges are prone to leaks and when you ever need to replace the gasket or remove the heads they never line back up again, they flex due to the heat cycles and you need tp pry them back in place to line up the bolt hole just like stock headers. a solid flange never moves and stays flat, easy to replace gasket and reinstall. that said macs are a good product with draw backs.

How about brother's performance shorty headers? It's a solid flange and has a great design. Comes with new header bolts, gaskets, and new exhaust bolts. For 124 bucks, it looks like a good deal. I can't spent too much money on headers like JBA, bassani, and other fancy expensive headers. I can purchase macs and brother's performance.

Cool. What do you think about the BBK shorty headers. I've heard stock 5.0 videos with them, and they sound great. There chrome, but it has coating to improve it's life and reduce temperatures. I have an old Muscle Mustangs and Fast Fords magazine January, 2003 edition. There's an article, which is about a stock AOD high mileage LX, that they are experimenting with. The article is called, simply EXHAUSTED. On a stock engine, the bbk headers, with x-pipes that have two high-flow catalytics, it gained around 15 to 20 hp. It only gained 3hp in the first run because the timing chain was very loose.

If I loose a bit too much back pressure, will I loose lots of low end torque, or just slightly? I think I have 2.5 inch tail pipes. If anything I'll put 2 3/4 tail pipes to bump-up the back pressure a bit to make-up for the loss. I'm also going to advance my ignition timing a bit. I'm using 93 octane fuel.
