Hello all,

:Word: I have a 96' Explorer with a 5.0. It recently started to hesitate. I has an AOD in it. It also has 195k miles on it. The best way to describe it is that it hesitates with minimal throttle. When it starts to do it if you accelerate to half throttle it almost stops. It does not matter which gear it is in. Wednesday I changed the trans filter, and fluid, added some lucas oil Trans fluid with it. No change. Friday I took it to a local mechanic, and he put a scanner on it. It was showing that the #5cyl was missing. We pulled the plug and it was leaned out. I figured bad injector, replaced it, cleaned the throttle body, upper/lower intake...no change. Any ideas?

I assume that you checked the spark plug for cracks on the insulator when you had it out? I ask because my dad's Aerostar was hesitating from a misfire, I pulled the plugs and one of the insulators was cracked(barely noticeable) and that was the problem.

Switch the plug with another plug and see if it changes which cylinder is misfiring. If you don't have a scanner, when you switch plugs, pull the plug wire and see if it changes in how the vehicle runs. If it is the plug, there should be no change.

It is often a bad plug wire for a light load miss like that. If you want, start the car with the hood up and in the dark. You might see spark seepage. Autolite wires are often lifetime warranty so swapping might not be a biggie.

Good luck.
