Factory keyless entry system, can it be removed safetly?

My car doesn't have the module in the trunk. The guy that bought my old car said he'd pull it out and give it to me as long as it didn't mess anything up.

Can the system, module and antenna, be pulled from the car without any ill effects?

The only thing the keyless entry module does that I know of is turn on the interior light when you lift the door handle. Without the module, the light turns on when you open the door. I guess you can see if someone's hiding in the car before you open the door.

I really need to get my hands on one of those modules, does anyone know if one out of a newer car will work(96 and up)???
