Fan + Underdrives = Overheat?

Thanks man,

The fan is "Torq Flo" and is run simply through a relay to the ignition, as the thermostat was giving me problems and in a hung over rage last saturday I ripped it off

So yes it's working, and from what I can see it works well, the car will idle around 180-190 and never get over that. But, if you drive it it will get hot which makes me think pump- but I'm not sure.

I really didn't want an electric pump, being I've got the efan and guages hooked through the ignition already and don't want to add anything else electric to it. I'm gonna search on mechanical pumps I guess

Don't they make high-volume water pumps? I have a new stock pump on mine and it doesn't see anything higher than 180. Heating issues are a PITA that's why I changed everything but the heater core on mine when I only needed a new gasket

Yes they do make high volume ones as a matter of fact the brand i listed above are! They have seen75xxx miles onthere pumps with no problems! And sooooooooooo sexythey are! BTW i would wire the fan to a switch and run it all the time just to see if it makes a diffrence? peace

I bought the Ford Racing Cobra Radiator, and the Flex-a-lite 3300cfm cooling fan with the temp unit, and it never runs hot, especially for the weather were having here in florida.

Stock rad, clutch fan, properly functioning pump should be more than able to handle the temp issue. The fact your seeing over 200 to me seems to be a radiator issue. When I replaced my rad with a 100 dollar 2 core brass unit from the auto parts store the cars temps came down and stayed down considerably...pump turns or it doesn't, can't see that being a issue, especially if it's not leaking. The fan may be undersize but at anything over 20MPH the fan should really not be a factor, air flow alone should manage the temps.

This seems key to me. If you were having an issue of spinning the pump too slow, it would show up at idle.

I'm running

Pep Boys 3-core radiator
Pep Boys Bosch water pump
180* thermostat
water wetter
'95 Mustang electric fan
Prestone coolant 50/50 mix distilled H2O
Autometer Mech Temp Gauge (so i can read accurate temp)

I run a full set of March Underdrive pulleys.

On the hottest of days, the highest my temp will ever get is 188*. In fact, that's what my temp stays at constantly. If i do a WOT run on a hot day, it might spike to 195ish but as soon as i return to a cruising speed it drops back to 188 in a matter of seconds.

Okay... Here's where I stand and it's NOT very promising.

2 weeks ago I did this at the same time:

1) Electric Temp guage (autometer)
2) MAC Underdrive pullies
3) 16" Electric Fan

Then I started to overheat... or maybe the stock Temp guage wasn't showing it

Temp seems to shoot up when in stop and go after about 10 minutes of driving... 1st and 2nd gear (red light to red light, parking lots, neighbor hood) and temp will not drop back down

To remedy situation this week I replaced 1 at a time...

1) Replaced Thermostat w/ new 180 (still running over 210 after about 10 minutes of driving)
2) a)Flushed motor again with garden hose this time, added water wetter and 50/50 mix b)Replaced Radiator with new stock brass, and c) put stock water pump and alternator pullies on (still hit about the same)
3) Changed from one 16" fan to two 12" fans run on bottom 2/3 of radiator (Drove GREAT- 195 degrees until going through neighbor hood and jumped to 205 and then 210 AGAIN!!! and will not drop at idle)

Please help... starting to scare me. Should I mount each fan offset so that one will cover the lower radiator hose and the other the upper radiator hose??? I did see MUCH improvement while driving

Remove the UD pullies and your problems will be solved.
I had the same issues until I removed the pullies.
My temps instantly returned to normal.
Now I'm going to add the Mark8 fan and DCC controller and reinstall the UD crank pulley, 1 7/8 alt pulley and my Cobra H2O pulley.

Where is your AM temp sender mounted?

In the same situation where it heats up, if you get on the highway (or come home and put a huge box fan in front of the car while it idles), does it cool back down?

Sender is mounted exactly where the stock one was. I don't have a box fan, but it doesn't want to cool back down.

Can't bad timing cause a hot running engine? Just throwing another idea out there?

I mean the cooling system isn't complicated and you've checked everything:

Rad
Rad cap
Thermostat
Water pump
Upper and lower hoses
bypass hose

Other than that, bad timing? Head gasket not properly installed which covers a water passage? Wrong rotation on the water pump because either the wrong water pump or bad belt routing?

You know, none of this started until I put a Temp Guage in, and an electric fan on. The car runs PERFECT at 190 until I ROMP through a neighbor hood in 1st or 2nd gear, or rev it at idle. I've seen a lot of improvement this week with the new stuff except at low speed

^^^ That is probably going to be a fan issue I'm thinking.

So last night I changed the position of one 12" fan and raised it and placed it by the upper radiator hose, the other sits next to the Lower hose... I didn't have time to test it, but I'll see if that does the trick

I still think that it could be a fan issue. But without being able to heat it up and sit the car in front of a big fan, or getting on the highway (another means of creating a lot of air flow), it's tough to diagnose a bad fan.

I'll heat it up and jump back on the highway tonight and pray the temp cools down... I was so mad it spiked to 205 or 210 last time I pulled back into my driveway and shut it off...
