Fox Father son project

I bought a 92 GT for my son and I to work on. I want to do for him what my dad did for me. The car is in good condition. The 5 speed was almost toast when I bought it and I finished it off on the way home. The gentleman couldn't give me any relevant info on the car. What I can see is aluminum heads, long tube headers, cobra intake, aluminum pulleys, aluminum drive shafts, aftermarket springs, and sub frame connectors. It looks like someone knew what they wanted when it was built. The car itself is in great shape. Over the Christmas break we pulled the engine and transmission. There is a little rust on the shock towers that may turn into more. I have a friend coming to cut some inspection holes to see if the squash blocks in the frame are still intact. I hope to lean on you all for advice. I haven't done anything with a fuel injected car and haven't done any projects like this in 30 years. Here are some pics of the shock towers.

I've seen cars with shock towers in much worse condition get repaired. That one doesn't look that bad at all actually.

Here are some photos of the car. First thing is to address the shock towers. This is the only rust I can find. I need to pull the engine apart and see what it actually has in it. I would like to detune it some if that is possible. this car rips. I drive a tuned SHO and this car feels like it has the same power only more violent. I may be wrong but it is no where near stock. It looks to have 24 lb injectors. how much power can be made with 24 lb injectors? My son has his learners and cant drive on his own until May. He has not driven a stick but does ride a YZ250 so he understands a clutch. Once I identify the heads I will post and start asking questions. We just got the engine out yesterday. My next step is dropping the K member so my body man can access the tower area.

I was thinking the same thing. It looks like it would be OK for a while but thought we should fix it while we have the time.

yeah you want to do it now.... mines been apart for going on 5 years... drove it home.. and what I thought was a little surface rust on the strut tower area turned into me pulling motor... and cutting it open cleaning/removing rust and welding in new metal... both sides.. pass side wasn't bad at all, but redid it anyway...(it's like a box of chocolates, you don't what your going get until you crack that open...) and then figured why not rebuild whole car.... lol... I'm on the putting back together stage now.. and I'm replacing everything, removed rear end had redone.. put back in with new rear upper/lower control arm, springs... had motor rebuilt... added upgrades in suppression, motor, ect... I just can't wait to drive the damn thing... I sure wasn't expecting to have to do any of that when I got it... next, when weather warms pulling out rest of interior, cleaning up dying black, and replacing carpet, ect...

Dropped K member today. Bolts on driver's side look like they have begun to rot away. Got a body man coming over to replace the frame rails. I'll try to get some shots when we open it up.

Hopefully it’s not quite as bad as it seems. One way or another you’ll get it sorted out and move forward.

I haven't used them before personally, but Scott Rod panels are high quality for sure. I would recommend there skirt panels as well if you are going to go through this process to clean up the engine bay even more.
