Fender Size?

I am looking to get some new fenders, but it was brought to my attention that the 87-90 ones are a little different than the 91-93s and I have a 93. What is the difference of the earlier ones and will they work for my car? I am going to keep the 16 inch pony rims on there also if that helps

There is really not that much of a difference. The later ones are a little wider to accomodate the 16" wheels. There are plenty of people with the 16" wheels on an earlier car though. I have noticed that the tires do stick out a little on my 89 than on the later cars, but you won't have to modify anything if you get the earlier fenders. I would just make sure both of your replacements are the same.

Ok well it has come to my attention that they ARE NOT exact matches. Does anyone know how exactly to modify them to be installed without noticing a difference or where to find a couple fenders for cheap, other than a junk yard?

i havent ever noticed a difference between my friends 87 GT and my 93? they both had the same 17x9 wheel mounted on them??

From my expierence... the difference is not in the width of the fender. But in the opening size. The newer 90-93 fenders have a different fender extension. It give the wheel well more room. Again, i'm not saying the others are wrong. But i have a '86 and '93 with 17x9's and the same tires on them. The difference is the fender extension is closer to my tire. Try looking at photos to see what i'm saying. GOod luck

Dennis is correct!! It is just the front area of the fender where the extension is. I think some on here have 17X8 and 17X9 on 87-90 cars with no trouble. I put 17X8 with a 245 on my 81 with no trouble. (That was with 96 spindles too.)

Yeah, its in the front of the fender... Im running 17x9's with 255's up front on my 90 though with no problems so it doesnt really make that much difference. However, you would want them to match side-to-side.

Everyone got it. The fenders are completely interchangeable, as long as you have the correct extensions to match them. If you score a set of '79-'90 fenders, you will need the matching extensions. If you find a set of '91-'93 fenders, you can re-use your originals.

If you have a 93 I would not recommend the earlier style Fenders and Extension. I remember an Article in 5.0 Magazine from many years back where they wanted to use the Front Fender Extension from a 91-93 on an earlier Model and they had to use some tin snips to cut some of the Fender to fit the Extensions on.

the guy I got them from was running 18s with just a little rubbing, but he had to get rid of them because he needed the bigger fenders for his 20s he had on his other car

Would having the wrong year fender on,make one of your wheels look like it was sitting back further?I have had my car at two different body shops to check the frame and they said its either the fenders or that the k-member might be tweekd but they cant see it?

Yes, they tend to hit near the rear of the well and rub. Personally if a fender ever needs to be changed on a Fox Mustang, i would replace it with a 91-93 fender only. The pre-91 fenders are a downgrade IMHO and you will run into probs with 17" and larger wheels and get rubbing in the rear.

Also, the inner fender liners are different as well with the 91-93 cars having a slightly larger opening.

For me its better to order specific size of fender to Fender Car Parts, so that you don't need to waste time and money.
