First off -

The pan on my new AOD says Automatic Overdrive METRIC FORD

Metric WTF ?

Also, has anyone heard of Fairbanks Performance ? Had a sticker on it -

Lastly why does it have 3 different thickness shafts comming out where the stall / torque convertor goes on. There's a big one coming out of the center, with a medium size one comming farther out from within that shaft, and an even smaller, longer one coming out of that one ?

Sorry, I don't know anything about AOD's other than that ones going in my Stang lol.

Thanks - :)

they all say that, apparently ford put that on there because when they first started putting AOD's in their cars was baout the same time that they started using netric fasteners in them as well, it was more of a warning to the mechanics than anything else, to let them know there were metric fastenets on it, IIRC anyway

No kidding. I meant more about reputation. Not if it exists
Yeah, I coulda been more helpful, huh? Here's what I can offer: I've been looking into AOD shift kits and upgrades for a while, and Fairbanks' name always comes up, but not with any overwhelming endorsements. I checked the 5.0 forum and they seem to be pretty into the Transgo kits I think. Still, Fairbanks has been around forever, and I remember seeing their stuff show up in magazines over the years.

Regardless, if your AOD has a shift kit or any other upgrades, that's better than nothing at all, and the AOD can use all the help it can get.

thanks :nice:
he seems to think it'll hold a mild supercharger, or turbo set up on my 302

pretty sure the three shafts are there because it uses a lock up torque converter

WTF ! I got a 2,500 stall non lock up

something to keep in mind, is the shift pattern of an AOD - which just stinks for racing.. To get into 2nd, you must shift 1st to 3rd and back to 1st - and your timing has to be right. This wasn't sufficient for me, so I went with a Lentech valve body, which makes the shift pattern 1-2-3. It has a solenoid in it that you can activate with a switch, that will automatically allow the trans to shift from 3-4 - while racing, this would be turned off - because shifting from 3-4 in an AOD (no matter how well prepared), is just a bad thing.

so it's like the car shifts from first into third, and you have to manually downshift it from third back to 2nd ? Wait how do you manually shift from 3-4, and why not do it ? I'm confused. I thought it works just like a new AODE. :bang:

I'm not sure how an AOD-E works, quite frankly, I forget :)

With the Lentech valve body, you don't shift from 3-4 manually, it will automatically upshift when you reach a certain speed/eng rpm (not sure what the criteria is). But because the bands or whatever for 4th are really week, you don't want any powerful shifts into that gear.

I did ALOT of looking into this, as I plan on racing my stang for fun in auto-x's n stuff - and that involves lots of 1-2 shifting.

And yes, to shift into 2nd, you must semi-quickly, but not too quickly, shift from 1st to 3rd back to 1st. My 92 t-bird is the same way (normal AOD in that car too).

And supposedly the circuits in the valve body are a different design to allow better lubrication, more consistency, yadda yadda Check it out at their site.. I got the Street Terminator (calibration 2). If I ever do another AOD, this valve body will be the 1st thing I buy.

And no - I'm not a lentech sales rep - just real happy with how well that valve body works.

ha ha.

Yeah thanks- I'm just surprised to hear of this goofy shift pattern in the AOD. If I just leave it in drive it'll go through the gears like normal though right. Guess I know what one of my next mods will be. I'll check out the current shift pattern and then see what I need to do. Probably go ahead and call Lentech and get the same valve body you have. :bang:
