fiberglass set time?? NEWB ME AM AT THES.

I am fiberglassing something for my car and Iam using the fiberglass repair kit from discout auto. Heres the question How long does it take for it to harden enough to be sanded?
I have had it drying for 2 hours and its still sticky, not to where the stick stays on you but where you can stick a piece of paper to it and it will hold for about 10 sec then fall off. Did I miss it wrong?

And can I use a grinder to get the big spots off or stick to sanding???


THIS IS THE FIRST TIME I HAVE WORKED WITH FUBERGLASS!


Hopefully when I am done with it it will look great. AND NO I WON"T TELL ANYONE WHAT IT IS UNLESS, YOU BRIDE ME!

Oh and I have never worked with fiberglass.

i kent read?

id doesn't say anything about time, just when its "throughly hard" sounds creepy
I might know why it might be sticky I put 3-4 less drops of hardener than was suppose to due to the stuff turning into jello within 45 sec it was jello then a rock.
But I could have been mixing the right amount cuz i wasn't using a full ounce when I was using it.

I will see about starting a new thread when I have accomplished more and gotten some other thing done.

Too some it may be usefull but others might not need it.

my son and i are working on making a fiberglass skateboard. we did 3 layers, and it was completely set in about 12 hours. we still need to add about 4 more layers of fiberglass though because it is too flexible right now.

that was the first thing we have done with fiberglass

Get some twine and put between the layers. That will add strength.

When mixed properly, it should set to hard in about 30 minutes. (Hard is when it can be sanded with course sandpaper or a manual putty shaping board.) If it's taking longer, you didn't get enough hardener in it. (Air temp has a LOT to do with cure time. Cooler air will require a few more drops. It will harden, though.) You can put a spotlight close to the area, or set it in the sun to cure it faster.

If the item you are building is structural, you will need fiberglass matting to give it strength. It can be woven or "random". You can grind it. (Cover your arms. That crap makes me break out.)

Well I found out that your not suppose to layer it all at once thats why it was sticky and thats why it was so hard to work with.

the funny thing is that my brother uses the stuff alot but I never got ahold of him.

Thanks for the tips reddy351. I will post lots of pics when its done. Only problem is it might be postponed for two weeks Ive got to get ready for a trip and the I have to work every day until I leave so.
