The Gas Tank

Earlier in the week, I posted a different thread trying to decide whether to buy an aluminum cell, or cheap out and buy a plastic one. The concensus at the end of the thread was That I was gonna build one out of steel instead.

I cannot Tig aluminum, my machine won't handle it, and I don't have the experience to make it look decent.

I can mig my ass off though, so I decided to call my steel supply guy and have him cut and bend the necessary pieces out of standard cold rolled mild steel.

I wanted 15 gals. I did some math and figured that it would take a rectangle 10"H x 23L x 17 W to get that volume. So that is what I had him cut.

Unfortunately he was swamped and I didn't get the stuff until yesterday, but I prepped the trunk so I would have that behind me.

(stupid camera. Always has a problem w/ backlight)

What we're seeing here is where I cut out the spare wheel well, and patched in a piece of 18 ga sheetmetal. I hand rolled a 3/8 lip to add structural integrity to the cut out, as I intend to mount the future tank just like they did in the older fords, through the bottom of the trunk floor.

Thursday afternoon I get the call from steel dude, so I go get my junk.

A top, bottom, and a folded side Total invested so far........$35.00

So I set out building the thing. It's still 18 ga., so I gotta weld it in sections at a time to keep it from warping.
View attachment 187354

If you'll look closely, you'll see where I started and stopped every weld. I only went about 4" at a time, and then would rotate the box to the next side.

What tha?

When you are concerned that they weld integrity has to be as good as it can get, and you have a damaged eye, sometimes you need a little extra uhhh "magnification".

Whats that doo dad next to the ant burner? It's the bulkhead that I welded to the inside of the tank that will allow me to bolt my fuel pump to the tank wall. Why did I have to make it an "inny" and not just weld some bolts to the out side of the tank wall?
Well, when you have to drop the tank through the floor, the opening is only big enough to allow the tank through it. Any bolts hanging off the wall would not let it slide by.

There now. Glad we got that out of the way.

View attachment 187356

Another shot of the weld quality. I'm pissed that I had to stop and start, otherwise it woulda looked like it was tigged.

The top w/ the sending unit and filler holes reinforced.

The "box", Complete and ready for red kote.

Speaking of Red Kote, The more inquisitive of you should be wondering what I'm gonna do to keep a mild steel box from rusting like mad inside, especially now that all gas contains 10% ethanol.

Well enter Red Kote. A gas tank sealer that effectively coats every inch of the inside surface to seal it and prevent any rust. Additionally, it will seal small pin holes up to 1/32" should I have any from the welding process.

View attachment 187359

And pinholes?

View attachment 187360

Just one.

This stuff oozes out until it clots like a cut. Obviously, I had the tank upside down from this picture, but its already on it's way to drying, so I'm not gonna fk with it.

The total I have in the tank is 60.00. I reused the sender out of the factory tank, and I had to custom make the filler neck anyway, so I think I'm in it pretty decent. I'll paint it and hang it tomorrow, and the fuel system will be done.

I would like to know more about the red kote. This probably sounds like a dumb question but, how did you apply it? do you just dump the can in and slosh it around? How do you make sure you covered ever inch of the tank? Also, who is your metal guy? lowes is much more expensive and I have to bend all my stuff myself. As all ways. This is an awesome build Mike! Keep up thhe good work.

Red Kote is available from O'reillys Auto parts. Cost 22.00 per qt. I only needed one.

Yeah you just tilt the tank until you've pretty much moved it to every possible angle you can and let it sit at that angle for a couple of minutes. It has the consistency of red loc tite so it don't "slosh"

The metal guy is in bessemer. You should be able to find yourself one in your mkt. Just google sheet metal and see who comes up.

Very nice job, that looks awesome. Even cheaper than plastic too.

That's cool. I'd never heard of red kote either. Gonna have to make a note of that! With fuel tank almost out of the way, are we going to hear this beast run soon?

Actually, now that the tank is built, I can almost restore it to running status. The part that is missing is the filler neck that will seal off the tank when I put gas in the tank. I'll have to buy that from one of the 60's mustang resto suppliers.

Thanks L.D. But it's still just a box. At least it'll be under the car and out of sight.

Thank you sir. Cheaper only because my sheetmetal guy likes me. Had I had to go to Lowes like 90Stang5speed, I'd probably not be in it anywhere near as cheap though.

Well, knowing how to weld certainly helped a little

Yeah, I need to find a metal guy lol. My little turbo box cost a lot more than the 15 gal fuel tank. I did find a metal shop to get 2x2 square stock for the sub frames. I will check them for sheet metal too. How's the body work coming along?

You know how bad I hate body work. Building the gas tank was a welcome diversion from sanding. I have the entire passenger side to finish. It is untouched. The painter called me on Saturday to see where I was progress wise, and I told him a month of Sundays away.

I've been stalling on the body work on mine too. I dont have your skill so I kind of fear it. Its not going to fix its self though. Keep up the good work Mike.

I never knew you cared

It's been a slow week.

I've been working on installing the tank and fuel system. I started on the other side, It's about 80% done. I removed the door in anticipation of sanding the full jamb and prepping the door itself for paint. Now that it's off, I can repair the worn out hinge assy.

I've started ordering "personality items" Namely the Gas filler cap and the Pony grille emblem that'll go on the driver side of the mesh grille.

Next week will be a big leap forward, as I finally have the remaining 550.00 in "disposable funds" that will allow me to buy the tail light kit; back up light kit; parking light kit; license plate light; and the all important 1969 gold reflective mach 1 stripe kit.

I bought the gallon of 1969 Ford Candy Apple red base coat last week, ($350.00 whew!) as well as the satin black "kit" for the hood and tail light panel. I already had the gallon of clear.

So now all that is in the way of getting it done now is .......................
.................................................................................................................................................................................................................................TIME.
Well that and a whole bunch of sweat.

The dog is tired of waiting as well.
(kinda looks like he has no back legs, for what ever reason he likes to sit at the top of the stairs, w/ his ass higher than his front. Thinks he's a human bean)

Black anodized billet cap w/ red detail and stainless button heads.

All that I need is a piece of rubber hose to couple the upper filler and lower filler necks together.

Grille emblem

Pump bolted to tank wall.

My personal hell.

I also have been consumed w/ the fact that the nose was actually "tweaked" up higher on one side than the other. And whether or not anybody would've noticed it, I have been dicking with it trying to even it up, so I added a bunch of body work back to what was basically a "finished" area.
