Sorry, no extra pics due to work letting me know how needed I am while on vacation. You guys are both right. I actually set aside money for the "Super Awesome Dart Block Extravaganza Build" and actually have a shortblock picked out with all the trimmings. After days of deciding who was going to build it and working through the details I decided against it.

Now I know this is a total lapse in judgment as the misses told me "I don't care, I just don't want to know what you spend". Regardless of my urge to order half of the Summit catalog and get the shortblock I had decided on, I'm going with what I can salvage or will build a 306. Now I am not saying that a man can't get a hell of a lot of fun out of a balls out build, but ultimately is it worth the cost difference? In this case I've figured the difference to be about $10k after the new fuel system, transmission, clutch, etc, needed to support the previously planned build. Can I do it, yup...am I?...no. I realize that I am a big kid, won't get the joy out of it to justify the money, and will just start another project as soon as it is driving (already eying an 84 capri). So we will see if the Scat piece will turn, if not, I've got a lead on a 302 crank, and some good rods from my machinist buddy. Hell, I enjoyed that turbo on a stock 302.

The good thing for anyone reading is that a stock-block turbo build just means the writer will be doing another rebuild thread in a year or two. That's what we call "win-win".

Hmmm....Let me see.

That's you, @Boosted92LX, @hoopty5.0 ,@RacEoHolic330, plus a few others joking about/dogging the potential reliability of a turbocharged power adder.

I have a few comments/questions concerning those views....

How does a major manufacturer of a new automobile put one of those time bombs on a car if they irresponsibly don't include the jack, and jack stands in the trunk? A car like like, ohhh ,...I don't know... A WRX? ( or any one of the myriad versions of that engine in lesser Impreza versions of that car). A Porsche turbo Carrera?
There are certainly a bunch of others, but I chose those two because they are far from " modest" when it comes to how much boost is added to them at factory settings, and the engines manage to make Hugh power and still come with warranties.

What do those guys know that us poor mere mortals somehow miss?

I'll take a stab at it.

Exceeding the mechanical capabilities of the engine as a direct result of too much boost.

Viable?

With all of the knowledge base out there, you'd think that somebody woul be able to testify as to how they've managed to settle on a boost level, tune to that power, and then be able to count on getting in that car, and driving it anywhere they felt like.

You'd think.

Instead, it goes the opposite direction.

NEWS FLASH!!! Joe Blow turns the boost up, goes for insane power figure in an attempt to make car un drive able, story at 10.

Within a month, the addendum goes something like.........................boom!

I can't see how any one power adder is any less reliable between a SC, or a turbo. They both have their pros and cons. One gets hotter than hell, and is more lineear in power application, and the other hammers the crank, takes XYZ power just to drive it, and makes a bunch of noise.

The common denominator is always gonna be the hand, that turns the screw, that keeps a spring closed.

I know the feeling bro... I had a knee operation and was unable to work for 7 months. I see one of the members had the same problem but with 2 years of non-working, which I don't know how I would handle

To be clear, i was just joking about the reliability of MY car, not turbo cars. That's because of my luck and my close relationship wirh Mr. Murphy.

Edit: see car fire.

Yeah, but you know stuff.
It's not like you just stumbled into a 76mm'd turbo car and you don't know the difference between a waste gate, and the front gate.

How'd I get roped into that? I don't even have a force-inducted car and it still doesn't run right!

Gentlemen, the answer is simple. Due to the auto industry's lack of creativity, knowledge (and overall zest for life) they have not truly looked into the expanse of pushing the envelope of a motor never intended to utilize said snail. We....gentlemen...are here to educate them not only on what happens under misjudged tuning, but small increments of "let us see what another pound will give me". Yes, we are Americans, and will continue to educate the world through the research and development we conduct. It's our duty and it comes with....well......obligatory jack stand use.

Oh, on another note, were heading to Vegas tomorrow.......I'm hoping they forgot about the lama incident on my last visit. Who knew they could drink like that?

hate to say uit, but this is probably why I've always been a Vortech guy. Turbo setups scare the crap out of me as I've never seen a guy actually be able to drive the car regularly.

So true.
I only read the first page, then the last post, but allow me to offer my experience...
Did HCI swap, blew it up... oil pump drive shaft sheared.
Rebuilt the bottom end (stock with new rings/bearings/pump)... lost a head gasket.
Had the heads gone though, all good, new gaskets and back at it... overheated and pillowed the radiator... exhaust gas in the coolant.
heads/intake off, new rad/gaskets, back together... blew it up, stock block and stock rotating assembly did not like rpm.
Night after night, weekend after weekend... nickle and dime... threw in the towel, you win Mustang.
Too many things in my life way more enjoyable than turning wrenches in frustration.
Set the car aside and started saving... someone else can do this and I will enjoy my life.
Wife had a melt down and needed to take some time from work. Our lives were set up on 2 incomes, so, nearly depleted "disposable savings", dug into savings, and the credit companies were loving us.
Wife went back to work after several years. (she's now upper management, time off served her well!)
Got finances back in order.
Started saving again.
10 years later gave the car to a reputable/respected/successful builder. Pen'd out the game plan a set it in motion.
Several visits and a year later, friendship formed and fully operational, totally sorted, complete car was back in the garage.
Best 11 years of my life. Wife at home, no house work, no cooking, Jeep'n, mountain bike'n, camping, weekend trips to Cali... dinners out on the town with the wife... no car stress... wait a minute, what car?

In my case, it was sell it/burn it/kick it's teeth in... or save and have someone with the time bill me for it.
Could not be happier.

Horse puckey. Drove mine to work today. Going to drive it again tomorrow. It just takes a while to make a 24 year old car reliable when you more than double it's stock hp. I did like @cleanLX said and started with the rear end and worked my way forward. Only things stock in the driveline are block, crank, rods. That'll change soon.

Think I'm done playing the "throw money at me" game with the Fox. Great car and love the old car muscle feel and the tinkering, but it's an uphill battle. After all the time, money, blood and sweat, my car is still 50hp shy of a STOCK Coyote and unsuitable for daily driver duty.

Couple that with the fact that the G/F and I just moved into a new house, that doesn't have parking for 3 vehicles and it's icing on the cake. Think she's going up for sale in the spring along with the pick-up and I'm going to turn my sights towards a '13-'15 GT, Ready to trade in the creaks, groans and everything in between for a turn key, reliable, consistent, comfortable daily cruiser.
