Firing problems on my 302.

waht do u mean u can see it advancing?

if you have a timing light on it and give it gas, you will see the timing mark move as the distributor advances

It's blowing a flame some times

as in back-firing thru the carb??

and just poppin when i accelerate.

same question as above........

since you were inside the motor, are you sure everything was put back together correctly, especially the cam???????

yeah i had my mecanic do the cam, and put the motor kind of together, i just dropped it in, put the carb, and everything else. He just helped finsih the motor.

Yeah it's backfiring through the carb..

Tips on getting all the oil/water out of the motor?

Before you remove the oil/water milkshake, you need to find out how it's getting mixed. Won't do you any good to get it clean and waste another 5 quarts of oil that's mixed with water. If and when you do diagnose and fix it, do NOT add antifreeze till after it's run long enough to verify the problem's been fixed. No sense wasting antifreeze or oil. Oil and water can get mixed anywhere, cracked block, heads, bad intake installation, blown head gaskets, timing cover installed incorrectly, and a few others I probably missed. You might also consider a new mechanic too.

yeah he was a deusch bag. If i cant get it to be right this 3rd time around, im' going to have it towed to a mechanic to finish. It's been to long and to much money has been wasted.

the most common source of popping when accelerating is severly retarded timing. Check it with a light, but I would more than guess you are sitting on the other side of TDC.

I checked it with the light and there is a circle but nothing to line it up with. All i see is a circle and it jumps around.

What do u mean by the other side of tdc? bdc? lol

Your popping may also be coolant being sucked into the adjacent intake ports next to the coolant ports. Figure out the oil/water problem first.

How should i go about figuring it out? I'm going to tak the v/c off again make sure the oil is ok. There is fire comin out of the carb so i'm assuming it's just bad timing and the leak was having the wrong gaskets (dumbass mechanic again) and the intake mani not sealing.

Generic timing is 10* Before Top Dead Center.

Timing at say, 10* After Top Dead Center causes the motor to pop when accelerating from idle or "stabbing" it from a slow roll. That, and it doesn't sound that great when you rev it up.

Pull the intake and look at the gaskets and sealing surfaces, sometimes you can see the evidence, sometimes not. At least reinstall it with new gaskets adn try that. Start it before trying to clean the mess, running it a few minutes won't hurt it.

Did that. Got new gaskets. I pulled my valve cover and the oil was like water. I dont know what the hell is wrong. Maybe a hose is in the wrong place? I'm going to get it sent down to a shop to finish. I've spent to much money and got no where. I'll leave it up to the pro's now. :(

Any progess? Im in the same kinda situation and ran into this... My car would only idle at fully advaned timing. Meaning the radiator hose wouldnt let it go further. The guy who runs the garage where I keep it had me move every plug wire on the cap over one position, thus retarding it however many degrees. That pretty much did it. the timing can now be adjusted throughout the normal travel of the distributor and I was able to let out the idle screw to keep a much lower RPM going at idle. So is this just a quick fix for a bigger issue or a viable solution?? Thoughts?? :flag:

Nothing wrong with jumping the wires on the cap, only other solution is to pull the distributor and stab it back in where it needed to be. With the quick fix, the only problem encountered is when someone else plays with it and is unaware that the wires are moved on the cap and the #1 wire isn't where the #1 terminal is. You can leave it as is, it'll hurt nothing. :nice:
