Firing problems on my 302.

Any progess? Im in the same kinda situation and ran into this... My car would only idle at fully advaned timing. Meaning the radiator hose wouldnt let it go further. The guy who runs the garage where I keep it had me move every plug wire on the cap over one position, thus retarding it however many degrees. That pretty much did it. the timing can now be adjusted throughout the normal travel of the distributor and I was able to let out the idle screw to keep a much lower RPM going at idle. So is this just a quick fix for a bigger issue or a viable solution?? Thoughts?? :flag:
update, went back took off the mani, replaced the gaskets and sealed it all again. Changed the oil, still leaks. somehow my dizzy is stuck in my motor...

Take the manifold back off. Clean all the gaskets and sealer off the heads and intake. Set the intake back on the motor, inplace where it should be. Check the clearances between intake and head, then intake to block. You might have a larger gap in those places than the gaskets can fill. Were the heads, intake, or block millled ?

No, the nothing was milled. I just got an aftermarket intake mani. How sohuld i check the clearances?

Like I said check the clearances. And not all intake gaskets are the same thickness. They range from around .040 to .120.

i'll try it. I'm having my mechanic come over to take a look at it. I hope it's only the gaskets causing the problem and i dont have to take the motor out again.

my first guess would be the intake gasket. I bet it is the front or back of the mani. Use a bunch of blue rtv insted of a gasket in those parts as it works better and the gaskets b/c they are split tend to squich out went they r put on. Well this is what I remember from my 302 so I could be totally wrong on this motor. But its an idea.

i already knew not to use them. It's just sealer. I'll let u know if i ever figure out wat the problem is. :(
