Flowmaster choices

I was wondering what everyone thinks is a good choice of flowmaster muffler?

I'm looking at either the Super 40 or the 40 Series delta flow. I want that flowmaster sound but I don't want the droning that comes with them. Both claim reduced interior noise but I figured I'd ask and hope someone is running either and can let me know how they sound.

Get the delta flows, definitely want all the help on resonance you can get.

Not sure what the 'Super 40' series are, they sound more like the originals. I know the Delta Flows were specifically designed to cut down on resonance.

My car has the 40 series delta flows, long tubes and sounds great IMO. Little loud, but i can't imagine it sounding much better. Even flowmaster-hater Rusty said it sounded good

super 40s are good on a smaller engine like 289/302 it isn't too loud. i had delta 40s and super 40s on my 289 with mild mild mods. and with the exhaust cut off at the mufflers it was loud, with the tail pipes back on it was manageable sounded nice too. with the 392 and super 40s with tail pipes all the way back it's prolly at least 2x louder than when the 289 had the pipes cut off at the muffler. the delta 40s were okay but imo they had more drone but was quieter. just at certain RPM, like round town cruising, was the loudest note of the exhaust. atleast with the super 40s theres a lot more to hear lol. i'll tell you how the delta 50s are when i try em on my 392.

oh yea it wasn't a stang but i put a delta flow 40 on my BMW 530i once. i cut off the exhaust and it was like.. 2 decibels louder, thats it. i could actually drive around without a muffler on that engine cause of the cats/resonator x-pipe and it would be quieter than most crotch rockets. the deltaflow 40 i put on made it sound almost EXACTLY like Dinan mufflers. but it sounded better imo just cause i think the dinan stuff sounds kinda p**sy. just some more info on deltaflow 40s.

they dont call them "slowmasters" for nothing, if you just want loud then go for it. If you want more power and a bit of sound go magnaflows,borla,dynomax,hooker. Flowmasters really kill power.

Whats so bad about Flowmasters, and why do they kill power?

I have seen a few poeple say that in different threads, but no one ever explains why they kill power. I personally don' t believe they do.

I think Magnaflow sounds like crap. It sounds better on the newer Mustangs though.

To the OP, If you want the sound of 40s but not the resonance then get the delta 40. I have the regular 40s on mine and it sounds mean, but does resonate inside.

The super 40 will be deeper sounding but quieter and reduced interior resonance as well.

The delta 40 sounds alot like the 40 outside the car. The super 40 is not as loud outside at all.

I also have a super 40 on my truck and love it on there because the truck should sound deep and mellow in my opinion.

I am running Flowmaster 40's and before I sound deadened my interior, the drone was bad. After sound deadining, I can say it is really the perfect exhaust note. Really unbeatable sound when you get on it and noticable, but not droning at cruising speed. Can't say how the Delta's are since I haven't used them. I have Magnaflows on my 2007 GT and while they sound good on a late model, I would never want them on my classic. IMHO the tone is too mellow. That does not mean they aren't loud - they really come alive when you step on it, but I prefer a bit more raspy sound for my classic and the Magnaflos is a much deeper tone. In the end, this is all about opinions and there is no shortage of them. You should listen to sound/video clips on YouTube (there are many) or go to a cruise night and get some first hand observation. As for the comment that Flowmasters are slower, I call on that. Show me the dyno data to back that up.

I wish someone would give some data that shows the Flowmaster is not good for performance. I know several people that have been drag racing at the track for years and thats all they run is Flowmaster.

Magnaflows are my other choice. I really just can't decide haha. I know everyone has Flowmasters etc but I do want that muscle rumble. At the same time though I will occasionally use this as a DD so I might want a bit more tame.

You could also put a pair of Flowmaster 50 series.

A friend of mine has them on his 70 and it sounds good and not loud but the same sound and inside noise is greatly reduced.

i'm going to be putting a pair of 50's on my stang i'll let you know..

and ya i'm pretty sure the super 40s are louder than the delta 40s, but have less resonance than regular 40s. ahh the world of 40's.

I beleive the problem with flowmasters is they dont promote good exhaust scaveging, I read a engine build by Joe Sherman on a pretty high hp engine, he tested the 3" flowmasters and 3" magnaflows on that engine on an engine dyno an there was like a 25-30 hp loss with the flowmasters. I'm sure the difference wont be like that on a mild engine but MM&FF did a muffler shootout on a 5.0 mustang and flows were down on the bottom and some of the noisiest while borla,magnaflow,hooker max flow were on top on hp and tq so there is some truth to what I said.

I would go with Borla XR 1's. They sound great and make great power. I believe some magazine(have to go through my stacks ) did a test on Flowmaster, Borla , Magnaflow and I believe Warlock's. Borla did the best with Magnaflow coming in at a close 2nd.

My decision is really between Flowmaster and Magnaflow. I like the sound of Flowmasters but the performance of Magnaflows. I gotta make a decision soon cause running open headers is making me def.

I don't think that Magnaflow really out performs Flowmaster that much and especially not that much unless you have a really high power motor. I wouldn't worry about it and go with what you like.

Ok so I think I'm gonna go with Magnaflows for the car as I will drive this more often than just cruising. I'm wondering now what size muffler to get?

I'm going with a 2.5" setup with X-Pipe. On Magnaflows website there are many various sizes of mufflers. Can anyone who has the setup maybe let me know what muffler dimensions and inlet outlet locations I need? Thanks.

Chambered mufflers hurt power, my spin techs did over the Magnaflows even though I liked the sound of them. I too would go the Magnaflow/Borla/ or pretty much any straight thru muffler design over the chambered stuff.
