Flywheel spacing??

Hey everyone, I have a project someone else gave up on because they believed the motor was locked. Being a freshly rebuilt 289, I decided to take the risk.

I seperated the tranny (C4) from the motor (289) and the pump gear was snapped in half. I believe it was due to the cheap washers between the flywheel and crank in that it wouldn't allow for the torque convertor to properly index or work..

Anyway, the motor turns nicely but before I put the fresh tranny back in, I need to make sure I correctly install the new flywheel.

Question is: "Should the flywheel be spaced in some fashion between it and the crank?" I've not been into 1 of these in 16 years so I need a refresh... I appreciate the help in advance.

The only engine i recall having a spacer between the flywheel and crank is a 4.0 L Explorer engine,
did you actually find washers there??
otherwise simply installing the torque converter incorrectly could have jammed and cracked the pump gear

No spacers on the flexplate. That pump gear was snapped from the other owner trying to force the engine and transmission together without having the converter seated all the way into the pump. When the converter is all the way in, when you mate the engine to the bell, the converter studs will be behind the flexplate slightly. you'll then have to pull the converter forward using a flat screw driver as a lever.
