I own a 69 Mach 1 which the PO had a 351C with a FMX. This spring I have to choose between rebuilding or replacing the tranny. I do not race it, but drive it every day. Fuel economy is the least of my concerns. Would there be any good reason to replace it, it's served me well for 6 years. Enlighten me with your knowledge and let me have your opinions.

Find a good small local trans shop. I have them done for $300-$400. I would just have it rebuilt.

Broarder Performance can sell you a complete rebuild kit for your FMX. If your gin is really stout (over 450 hp), then you should know that the FMX can only handle so much power and that there are not hi-po parts available for that kind of power. In such a case, you'd be best advised to put in a built C4 or C6.

I got all my stuff from BP and can vouch for Jay as a good guy. He let me bend his ear both before and after he got my money ($1200 just in tranny parts, not including the TC, which I got from Edge)

the fmx is a great trans other than it's fairly heavy but doesn't weigh much more than a c6 and about the same as an aod. for a stock or mildly built 351 it'll do just fine just make sure the rebuilder uses good components in the rebuild, i'd get the parts from Broader and just have a good local shop build it or get a rebuilt one from Broader and just have it installed. whichever you choose there's no need to replace it with something else like a c4,c6 or aod unless you're making over about 450hp.

You could swap in a OD tranny, but it'll cost lots more than rebuilding your FMX.
