forged or hyper?

I am about to start rebuilding my motor and are unsure which pistons I should order.

the motor is going to be n/a, with trickflow heads,b-cam, and most of the usual bolt ons.

wat do you guys think. and its goin to be a daily driver

I say go with what your budget can afford. I would say go forged. Remember all forged pistons are not the same. Don't get high silicate forged pistons.

For an N/A application, I'd go for the hypers. The clearance tolerance will end up tighter overall.

The forged offer a little more insurance for a blown a juiced app.

Sometimes for just a bit more you can get a forged set. I was originally just gonna build a 306 with forged pistons because I spray but ended up going 347 from CHP because it was only a few hundred dollars more than a 306.

well originally I wanted to do a stroker kit but I was told by someone that they're not as reliable as à 306....I'm not sure why they told me that so then I was looking up to do a 306,but wasn't sure wat the difference was between the forged and hyper pistons

I dunno why they would say that. Mine is a daily driver and it never fails to start and doesn't use any oil. My opinion would be do the stroker.

I haven't seen a kit with hypers so i dunno. I got mine from Coast for $799. That was Probe rods, Scat crank, Probe forged pistons, Clevite bearings and rings. http://www.coasthigh.com/Specials/Specials_current.htm I am sure that there are other good brands that some other guys can tell you about but Coast is the only one I have had any experience with.

I would just like to note that hyper pistons are not the weak link that everyone makes them out to be. They are a fine piston material and can stand up to good deal of abuse. They'll take more of a beating than cast pistons will are a great option for N/A and well tuned boosted application. If you have the opportunity, take a look at Groverdill's combination. He's boosted the crap out of it and they hold up very nicely. What they will typically not stand up to is an ameteur, out of whack, tune on a boosted or juiced application. Detonation will kill them faster than they would your typical forged offering but it should be known that they are in no way a bad offering. In some ways they are even superior to forged pieces.

That said.... if you even "think" that one day your combo might see nitrous or boost. I would (and have) also opt for the forged pistons. They're a bit tougher and will handle more abuse or "mistakes" in tuning that the hypers will.

i agree with bubba, eventhough he doesnt own an 86. for the money that your gonna spend on a kit, and the $100 you MIGHT save by getting hyper pistons, just get some forged ones.

Some of you guys say forged, BUT, how often have any of you seen a blown piston in a stock block? Almost never.

If the block can only handle 450hp and 6500rpm, there really is no point in putting in a piston that is equipped for 700hp.

BTW, hypers don't expand and contract so they will likely burn less oil.

If it were a 347 and the car was blown, i may say forged so you can get a dart or R block done you can swap internals.

BTW, i've seen the hyper version of the FMS 347 go 11.0 all day NA in a regular street car, no cage, daily driven until recently.

since ford put forged in their blocks from (atleast) 86-93, thats why we say forged.... because you dont see blown pistons!!!!!

I have seen a guy in corvette run mid 11s on hyper pistons.... and a 125 shot... that he had for 6 years.

NA Hypers are lighter and seal better.

the block is the weak point not the pistons.

I agree dill but i would rather over build for upgrades then underbuild. Keep the 86 Stang responces coming.

putting high end parts in a stock block, not the best idea....

when the block lets go, who knows if that fancy high end rotating assembly gets beat up or not.

544rwhp on stock 93 short block, hypers and all, but hey it is your money.
